Job overview

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, motivated doctor to join their Trust to undertake a funded PhD in diabetes technology with Dr Emma Wilmot.


Dr Wilmot is an Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham, Honorary Consultant at UHDB in Diabetes and founder of the ABCD Diabetes Technology Network UK.


As a recognised international leader in the field of diabetes technology, she leads on a range of diabetes clinical trials. The candidate will also be supported by Professor Iskander Idris, Professor of Diabetes who has a strong track record in metabolic research and PhD supervision.

Main duties of the job

During their tenure, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake a postgraduate PhD research degree and participate in the generic postgraduate research training at the University of Nottingham (the School of Medicine is based at the Royal Derby Hospital).


The successful candidate will contribute to the design and development of the study protocols, ethical approval, study delivery, data analysis and preparation of research outputs including conference abstracts and journal articles. The post holder will also provide medical oversight within ongoing studies.


This post is suited to a specialist trainee (ST3 or above) in either Diabetes and Endocrinology or a doctor with an interest and expertise in Diabetes, from an alternative medical speciality. Previous research and evidence of publication are advantageous but not essential.


You must be a GMC registered medical practitioner holding a licence to practice and possess MRCP. The Research Fellow post will be based in Derby, at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust for up to 3 years.

This is a full-time fixed-term service appointment; those wishing to undertake the post on a less than full time basis are equally welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will support the Specialist Medicine Business Unit, specifically within the Department of Diabetes


Whilst on duty the post holder will be clinically and professionally responsible for their patients.
It will also be their duty to:


•    Communicate with patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) about their condition;
•    Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment;
•    Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time;
•    Carry out any work related to, and reasonably incidental to, the duties set out in their schedule of duties, e.g. keeping of records and provision of reports, proper delegation of tasks, maintaining skills and knowledge.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to graduate and continuing medical education activity locally as appropriate and to participate in clinical audit under local arrangements (in light of relevant departmental guidance).

A formal schedule of duties will be agreed between the post holder and the Assistant Clinical Director for the respective area of Specialist Medicine Business Unit on appointment.  It will be a prospective agreement that sets out the post holder’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the period.  It will cover all aspects of the post holder’s professional practice including clinical work, administration, audit, teaching and CPD responsibilities.  It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.  In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of the post holder’s link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the post holder to meet the timetabled duties and their objectives.


The post holder will be expected to work as part of a team with responsibility for maintaining the highest standards of clinical care, for teaching of junior staff and medical students and for actively participating in continuing medical education, quality improvement, clinical governance and audit.

You will receive mentoring and supervision and be encouraged to join the established regional training sessions.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at the time of application
  • Completed at least 4 years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) in the UK or abroad including experience in Acute Medicine/Medical Specialties and Diabetes
  • Minimum of 6 months in the NHS within the past 2 years

Qualifications

  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the speciality
