Job overview
Consultant in General Internal Medicine with specialist interest, for University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust. To provide, with colleagues, General Medical Services as part of a fully integrated Assessment & Diagnostics service for Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and surrounding areas. Duties will primarily be in the General Medical wards.
This post will provide an excellent opportunity to become involved in the development and delivery of general medical services in a large teaching hospital.
Audit, research interests and management involvement will be actively encouraged. Candidates are encouraged to discuss flexible working requirements, although our preference is initially for a full job plan in general medicine. There is capacity to accommodate specialty interests by arrangement.
There is a strong emphasis on provision of high quality SIFT teaching, and those with an interest in teaching are encouraged to apply.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be responsible for the care of: -
• Management of patients on the General Medical Wards at University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
• Responsibility for personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in their job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of staff.
• Responsibility for the professional supervision of junior medical staff.
• We are also open to considering any specialist interests alongside this role. Please approach us to discuss this further.
• Provision of regular high Quality SIFT teaching to medical students.
Relevant participation in management
• Participate in the development of the new General Medicine service model and pathways.
• Responsible for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor” and of the “GMC Performance Procedures” and acting in accordance with them.
• An exceptional requirement to undertake additional duties for limited periods within the geographical area specified above or to undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.
• Responsibility for implementing the Infection Control Policies as determined by University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
It is expected that the appointee will work:
Monday to Friday. General Medical wards.
• A standard day on a General Medical ward involves leading a daily MDT board round at 09:00 -09:30, followed by a full ward round, from 09:30-12:00 (13h00 on Monday). Afternoon board round and review of results and new/unstable patients from approximately 15:30 - 16:30.
• One clinic per week. This may be flexed with other clinical activities such as the review of general medicine outliers, depending on need.
• The candidate will work an annualised total of 8 weekends per year, on the General Medical wards, (09:00-15:00, Saturday and Sunday) and 1 Bank Holiday per year (09:00 - 15:00).
• Together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for teaching and training of undergraduate medical students and junior medical staff.
• There is no on-call commitment currently.
• If appointed and agreed to have a specialist interest alongside the General Medicine role, job plans will be different to the example above and below. However, morning General Medicine work will remain the same.
Person specification
Management and Administrative Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit and management.
Desirable criteria
- Completed a management course for consultants.
- Leadership experience.
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register OR be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview and entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement OR Evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application (MUST be provided prior to interview)
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- Specialist registration in General (Internal) Medicine, or in a medical specialty or clinical pharmacology, with CCT including General Medicine
- Postgraduate thesis – in any aspect of clinical medicine or education
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical training & experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK Specialist Registration in General Internal Medicine.
- Experience in management of complex multi-system disease and co-morbidity.
Desirable criteria
- Experience providing dedicated General Medicine ward and outpatient services
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior doctors.
