Job overview
An opportunity has arisen to lead Derbyshire Pathology, one of the largest pathology departments in the NHS.
Derbyshire Pathology provides pathology services to Acute Trusts for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and Chesterfield Royal Hospital and associated community services. Derbyshire Pathology is hosted by University Hospitals of Derby and Burton but provides pathology services from laboratories at Derby, Burton and Chesterfield.
Derbyshire Pathology was formally formed on 1st July 2018 and delivers a range of pathology services including Blood Sciences, Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, Phlebotomy, Mortuary and Support Services, with over 630 staff and an annual budget of £58 million. As General Manager, you will guide and lead the operational team in the overall management of the joint venture and develop business strategic plans and performance management frameworks to ensure delivery of all key activities and financial targets.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an experienced senior leader with excellent leadership qualities, who has a proven track record in innovation and driving successful change. Supported by two Deputy General Managers, you will work closely to drive service integration and delivery and ensure that a high quality and responsive pathology service is delivered to both Trusts and other stakeholders. You will lead key projects which will seek to continue to maximise the opportunities of the network. Together with the Clinical Director, you will represent Derbyshire Pathology, in wider regional discussions to further develop pathology networks.
Effective communication skills are vital, as is the ability to influence and negotiate at a senior level. A successful track record of managing change and the ability to effectively engage with and develop our dedicated pathology team is key.
This is an opportunity to gain experience of working across organisations within a network where excellent working relationships are already well established. Derbyshire Pathology is hosted by University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation who provides a full range of support services to the network, including HR, Finance, & IT.

- Fellow of IBMS
- Demonstrable evidence of continuous professional development.
Experience and knowledge

- Significant experience working in a senior manager post
- Successful track record of managing change in a complex environment
- Experience of leading and directing senior clinical and non-clinical teams in achieving key performance indicators
- Highly developed financial management and business management skills
