Job overview

The postholder will act as the lead senior clinical specialist in Radiotherapy Treatment Service Delivery, taking overall responsibility for the supervision of the Radiotherapy Treatment machines (Linear Accelerators & Superficial Unit) and Brachytherapy. Working closely with the Radiotherapy Service Manager and Team Leaders to ensure the most safe and efficient use of resources in these sections.

They will provide a focus for leadership within the Treatment Section of the Radiotherapy Department, deputising for the Radiotherapy Service Manager as necessary.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will take operational responsibility for the Treatment area on a daily basis and will line manage the Team Leaders within the Treatment area, taking responsibility for all associated HR related tasks.

 The post holder will be required to work closely and collaboratively with Radiotherapy Service Manager, Consultant Clinical Oncologists, Team Leaders in the Pre-Treatment & Treatment areas, Radiotherapy Physics, Senior Managers and radiographers to ensure a high quality radiotherapy service is maintained and developed.

The post-holder will play a key role in service development in the treatment area identifying and leading on the identification of processes, equipment and facilities required for any changes to service delivery. They will communicate closely with the Radiotherapy Service Manager on all issues relating to Radiotherapy Treatment.

 The postholder will need to have a broad grasp of health care issues so as to be able to contribute towards overall radiotherapy service strategies and to participate and, on occasions, lead discussions at a national level on the direction and development of radiotherapy services for own area of specialty.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • DCR(T) or BSc in Radiotherapy and Oncology
  • MSc in a related subject or working towards
  • HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Management Qualification
  • Trained Appraiser and Recruiter

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post qualification clinical experience in radiotherapy, with experience at Band 7 or above
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management
  • A broad, specialised knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the radiotherapy service
Desirable criteria
  • Trained Investigating Officer
  • Risk assessment qualification / course.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced communication skills
  • Ability to plan, manage and prioritises own workload and that of the treatment area
  • Experience as a line manager with ability to provide advice & support to other staff
  • Ability to lead and manage service changes in treatment area.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of conflict resolution - managing patient concerns and complaints
