Job overview

The successful applicant will join a large team of existing orthopaedic consultant within the Trust. This is a dynamic, forward-thinking team with plans to grow further. The post also includes a 1 in 16 on-call commitment

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a high calibre individual who will bring added value and extra capacity to what is already a highly regarded and very busy unit.

At Royal Derby Hospital the specialty comprises 8 purpose-built theatres, 5 wards, pre-operative assessment and outpatient clinic facilities as well as the Pulvertaft Hand Unit, which has its own dedicated facilities.

Nottingham University has a graduate-entry medical school on the Royal Derby Hospital campus which has greatly enhanced the teaching and research opportunities for medical staff.  The Trust is committed to education, and you will therefore be expected to participate in student and postgraduate teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You should possess FRCS or equivalent, have completed a Higher Specialist Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics, and possess full GMC Registration with a license to practice and be eligible for entry on the GMC Specialist Register by one of the following routes:-

1.    Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) the proposed CCT must be         within 6 months of the interview date

2.    Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) CESR                       candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful                     application

The city of Derby is centrally located with excellent road, rail and air links and within easy access of both urban and rural activities including the Peak National Park. A good range of primary and secondary educational facilities and social amenities are also available

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of independent clinical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
  • Attended a management/leadership course

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
Desirable criteria
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course

Audit/Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of & commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possession of FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent
  • MBBS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • GMC Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedics Specialty OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.
