Job overview

We are excited to advertise for a Band 4 Assistant Psychologist to join our Neurodiversity Pathway within Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD), based in Torbay and South Devon. This pathway supports children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Tics or Tourette’s Syndrome, particularly where these conditions co-occur with mental health needs.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a service dedicated to providing assessments and specialist evidence-based interventions for neurodiverse children and young people.

Main duties of the job

Assist in psychological assessments, including cognitive testing and school observations.

Support clinicians in delivering evidence-based interventions for children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions.

Contribute to service evaluation, research, and audit activities.

Participate in multi-disciplinary team discussions and psychological formulations.

Gain experience in working with a range of neurodevelopmental conditions, including ASC, ADHD, and Tics or Tourette’s Syndrome, especially where these are accompanied by mental health needs.

Receive regular clinical supervision from a qualified Clinical Psychologist.

Develop skills in group work and other therapeutic interventions.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Bachelor Degree at Honours level at 2:2 or above, giving eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Graduate level knowledge of psychological theories relevant to child development & child mental health
  • Graduate level knowledge and experience of research and research methodology
  • Experience in working with children, young people and families
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist knowledge in the mental health of children & young people
  • Experience of working with children and young people with emotional and mental health difficulties, in a clinical or healthcare environment and / or community-based setting
  • Experience of working with children and young people with complex needs, e.g., children in care
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary and/or multi-agency services
  • Experience of teaching/training other professionals
  • Experience of individual or group interventions

Specific Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to develop good communication and rapport with patients and families
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in all contact with disadvantaged groups and ability to work with people from different backgrounds, cultures and of different ages
  • Able to work as a team member and to engage effectively with clients and staff across a range of contexts
  • Ability to translate basic psychological theory to clinical populations in a clinical setting
  • High standard of report writing
  • Ability to work with complex and frequently distressing clinical material
  • Experience of the use of psychometric tests
  • Experience in auditing, evaluating and developing programmes of intervention
  • Experience of using outcome measures to evaluate clinical practice
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload and work to deadlines
