The Dental Clinical Advisor, is a key new role with NHS Devon to lead, shape and inform our strategy for the future commissioning of NHS dental services, that deliver a consistent offer to patients of high quality, patient centred services building on best practice to deliver continuous improvements to accessing dental care for people living in Devon.  

The purpose of the role is to provide a solution focussed approach to dental leadership for ICB strategic plans, working with dental practices and the wider ICB team and community and acute providers to improve the quality and effectiveness of the services. Ensuring full engagement of dental primary care by inputting on the development and implementation of local system plans to progress the ICB’s dental strategy plan

Main duties of the job

In this role, the post holder will provide;

  • Dental expertise to and oversight of the dental strategy priority areas; Workforce, Access and Oral Health promotion;
  • Dental advice to ensure accuracy of dental communications from ICB staff (for example when responding to respond to media enquiries or addressing complaints)
  • Clinical support to the Dental Fellows.
  • Providing Dental expertise to and oversight to the ICB in developing and implementing strategic plans including leading and supporting access improvement plans.
  • Lead the design and implementation of Primary Care Dental Access from a dental clinical perspective including an appropriate staffing model.
  • Input on dental care professional’s pathway.
  • Providing strategic leadership for workforce development, through assessment of clinical skill-mix and development of ICB workforce strategy.
  • Responsible for holding staff to the highest integrity by adhering to all government regulations and obligations under the General Dental Council

Experience, Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered dental practitioner with current GDC registration.
  • Experienced clinician with credibility and the ability to command the respect of clinical dental teams and non-clinical professionals
  • Experience of developing, applying and reviewing an evidence-based approach to decision making.
  • Breadth of clinical experience relevant to our commissioning responsibilities.
  • Experience of active involvement in local, regional or national strategy groups.
  • Experience of leading a project, team and/or service.
  • Post qualification experience
  • Experience of service re-design
  • Knowledge of the importance of audit.
  • Track record of implementing changes to commissioned services.
  • An understanding of the implementation of evidence-based practice.
  • Local knowledge of the pathways of care for the individuals covered by this portfolio.
Desirable criteria
  • Management/leadership qualification
  • Experience of partnership working between organisations
  • To have a good understanding of integrated models of care across primary, secondary, tertiary and community care and appreciation of NHS contracting processes
