Job overview

The Outpatient’s Department is responsible for providing support for various clinics that attend the Department. The Outpatient’s Department is made up of 1 Band 7 Senior Sister, 1 Band 5 Registered Nurse and 3 full time Band 3 Senior HCA’s (including this role)  The team work flexibly, with a varied shift pattern in order to provide support to the clinics to provide diagnostic tests, including blood sampling, simple procedures and consultations, along with the relevant paperwork.

In your role, you will be supported with your development needs both from in house training and also from external courses whilst having regular supervision and appraisal to ensure you are helped to reach your maximum potential and development. You would be joining the Trust at a very exciting time as we roll out our new Patient Record System, EPIC.

Main duties of the job

Working clinically to ensure the safety and quality of the care given to your designated patients, under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse/practitionerUndertaking the following, but not restricted to, clinical tasks competently and efficiently:

 Cannulation and Venepuncture

Conducting ECG’s

 Preparation of equipment for various clinics

Decontamination of equipment within specific guidelines following procedures

 Provide support to patients as a chaperone during personal and invasive procedures

Competently taking and interpreting Vital signs on adults

Able to make appropriate referrals to Adult and Child Safeguarding teams

 Supporting and working with colleagues during the shift

  Liaising with the wider MDT to maintain safety

  Helping to facilitate the development of the service as part of the wider team

To participate in discussions and projects that will benefit the team, the patients and the ward as a whole

Working under guidance and in conjunction with the senior nursing team and the Matron

Following the Trust’s Policies and Protocols to ensure the safety of the department

·         To be able to work at a high pace throughout the shift

·         To be able to stand for extended periods of time

·         To be able to work for long periods of time in full PPE

·         To be able to manage the demands of moving and manual handling

·         Follow trust protocols and maintain standards

·         Be actively involved in developing policies and processes for the dept when required

·         Actively participate in service development

 

Finance, equipment and other resources

·         Competent use of equipment and supporting others, where required

·         Have an awareness of utilising stock and resources effectively

·         Ensuring resources and equipment are used appropriately and effectively, minimising wastage

 

People management and training

·         Previously known as ‘Responsibility for supervision, leadership and management’

·         Supporting any new staff

·         Responsible for ensuring their own compliance with competencies and training, ensuring that any updates are completed in a timely manner

 

Information technology and administrative duties

·         Follow TSDHCFT Policies and use correct agreed documentations

·         Stay up to date with the Trusts Innovative IT systems

·         Ensure mandatory training is up to date

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
  • at least 2 years experience as an HCA
  • GCSE Maths/English Grade A-C or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a variety of clinical areas
  • Flexible attitude to working patterns
