Job overview

 The primary function of this role is to provide a high standard of physiotherapy, to people with stroke and neurological conditions in the inpatient acute and rehab stroke units and in the Community Stroke and Neuro Rehab Team.

You will provide physiotherapy assessment and treatment, including the assessment of people with complex physical disability.

Main duties of the job

This post will form part of a Neuro Physiotherapy rotation, which also includes:

  • Rotation through different parts of the Stroke and Neuro service. 
  • There may be a requirement to work within different service areas as workload demands
  • The post-holder will provide physiotherapy assessment and treatment including assessment of people with complex physical disability
  • This role includes shifts rostered to work Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays

 

Working for our organisation

The Acute stroke unit is based at Torbay Hospital and admits 650 people with stroke each year; the stroke and neuro rehabilitation unit is at Templer ward Newton Abbot Hospital and admits 240 people with stroke each year. Templer ward is a rehab unit with 15 stroke beds and 5 neuro rehab beds.

The community teams with sites at Paignton and Newton Abbot provide a stroke ESD service as well as a service for urgent input for people with other neurological conditions and longer-term rehabilitation.

On the wards the post holder will be expected to contribute to providing rehabilitation to all patients. There is an expectation that when working in the community the post holder will see an average of at least 4 community visits per day with a higher number of contacts when seeing people as outpatients or using remote technology

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/degree in physiotherapy
  • Experience of providing stroke care in the UK at a minimum of band 5 level
  • Completed core rotations as a band 5 physiotherapist
  • Current HCPC certificate
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at recent postgraduate courses relevant to the clinical field in rotations
  • Post-graduate experiences including experience as a junior in a broad rotational post
  • Providing a broad range of experience in orthopaedics, elderly care, medical, surgical, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions
  • Experience of providing stroke care in the UK at a minimum of band 5 level
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience, at Band 6 level, in stroke or neurology

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of musculoskeletal, neurological and older people conditions
  • To possess expert therapeutic handling skills
  • Proven ability to work as part of a physiotherapy team and/or multidisciplinary team
  • Experience supervising student physiotherapists or physiotherapy assistant/technical instructors
  • Basic resuscitation, updated annually
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Standard keyboard skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Knowledge of the relevant NSFs and clinical guidelines
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning skills
  • Able to maintain judgement under pressure
  • Ability to work in the community without direct supervision
  • Able to contribute to weekend working rota
  • Must have a current driving licence and be able to transport self and occasionally passengers or equipment by vehicle within the community
Desirable criteria
  • To be able to provide education and advice on ergonomic risk assessment and continuing management, to patients and members of the multidisciplinary team / family /carers
  • Experience of implementation of clinical guidelines

Specific Skills

Essential criteria
  • Some experience working in a bio psychosocial approach to assessment and treatment
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications for services, including experience of quality issues and participation in research and audit
