We are seeking a suitably experienced Audiologist to work in this busy department, which covers all aspects of paediatric and adult audiology across a large urban and rural community.

We are particularly keen to appoint someone who can work with both the adult and paediatric populations. You will be expected to have a BSc in Audiology or BAA Parts 1 & 2 plus recognised higher training with demonstrable post-qualification experience or MSc plus CAC or STP.

Given the changes in education and training over time, of course equivalent demonstrable experience and qualifications will be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertakes audiometric tests on in/outpatients.
  • Provides expert clinical service in rehabilitation of children and adults with hearing loss and tinnitus
  • Assists with clinical supervision and training of trainee staff
  • Updates own professional knowledge, keeping abreast of new digital hearing aid technology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Duties

Rehabilitation duties

¨        Take social histories and listening needs assessments in children and adults, and combine these with diagnostic test results to develop the necessary management plans

¨        Take accurate aural impressions of children and adults

¨        Modify ear moulds using the range of laboratory equipment available

¨        Following national  and departmental guidelines and protocols, but with an understanding of when these can not be adhered to:

o    Select appropriate hearing aids and prescription formulae based on the needs assessment and diagnostic test results

o    Accurately fit digital hearing aids to adults and school age children, using real ear/probe microphone measurements, and assist senior staff in fitting pre-school children

o    Follow-up to enable fine tuning of digital hearing aids and onward referral to other specialist services

¨        Provide counselling to patients and/or significant others regarding the nature and extent of any hearing deficit, and the options on how this could be managed

¨        Manage distressed or angry patients sensitively, especially when disclosing test results and management options

¨        Provide audiological management to patients with significant co-morbidities, including mental health problems and learning difficulties

¨        Ensure patients and/or significant others are fully aware of the use of any devices issued

¨        Fault finding to provide a timely hearing aid repair service

¨        Manage complex cases, including taking referrals from junior staff

¨        Provide expert advice to other staff, including wards, health visitors and ENT

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc in Audiological Science or equivalent OR MSc level of expertise in a specialist area of audiology with BSC in Audiology or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • CAC, HTS or equivalent

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Registered as Clinical Physiologist in Audiology OR Clinical Scientist in Audiology

Aptitude and skills

Essential criteria
  • Proven ability to prioritise workload, instruct and direct others
  • Teaching and mentoring skills

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge
  • Proven post-qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience
