Job overview

The purpose of this post is to support medical student teaching within the Geriatric Medicine Department of Derriford Hospital. The successful candidate will provide teaching and support to medical students in years 2, and 5 as well as develop learning resources and occasional teaching of year 1 students. The post holder will split their time between the acute wards and the acute frailty unit and work closely with the HCE clinical teacher lead and HCE year 5 lead to ensure the smooth running of students’ learning pathways. The post holder is required to take annual leave during the medical student holidays and to undertake supervised clinical work in both the frailty unit and the HCE wards during non-student pathway weeks.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work closely with the Medical School Year 3 & 4 Leads, Clinical Leads, and the Clinical Liaison Team to deliver high quality undergraduate education to Peninsula Medical School students based in Plymouth University Hospitals NHS Trust.  

 The main duties of the role will include:  

  • Acting as key clinical liaison for medical students during their clinical pathway placements.

  • Coordinating and organising teaching for Pathway Weeks.  Liaising with Clinical Teacher Leads and clinical teams to improve delivery of teaching.  

  • Demonstrating and teaching practical & clinical skills within both the clinical environment and simulated teaching scenarios  

  • Leading clinical teaching within clinical pathway weeks and developing local departmental teaching opportunities for students.   

  • Liaison with nurses, junior doctors, other health care providers, patients, relatives as well as senior medical staff within departments to support the successful facilitation of the BMBS programme within allocated departments.  

  • Undertaking formal teaching both face to face and using remote platforms, when required. This could include the delivery of tutorials, lectures, Clinical Skills and simulation sessions across a range of specialities, both medical and surgical.    

  • Attending ward rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds as required to support the delivery of the medical education undergraduate teaching programme.  

  • Supporting quality assurance arrangements for clinical teaching within departments, as directed by the Pathway Leads / Hospital Sub Dean. 

  • Attending, when required, monthly Clinical Teacher Leads Meeting and other Medical School Working Groups

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • GMC registration with a current licence to practise and up to date revalidation.
  • • Certificate of completion of foundation training +/- further training.
  • • Minimum 2 full years NHS experience in the UK as a doctor, a year of which must be in the last 2 years
  • • A sound knowledge of basic clinical sciences and the ability to apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
  • • Experience of teaching in any setting.
  • • Good IT skills.
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of the Peninsula Medical School and experience of teaching BMBS students
  • • Experience working in geriatric medicine.

Qualifications

  • • MBBS or equivalent.

  • • Post-graduate certificate of clinical education
