Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Support Worker to join our friendly dynamic Team on Stannon ward. Stannon ward is a 32 bedded general internal medical ward.  We are looking for a highly motivated individuals who wish to work in this field of specialist care. We are hoping to recruit someone who is compassionate, dedicated and show a willingness to learn and develop skills and knowledge to support high standards of care. We aim to provide a friendly and professional working environment. Good verbal and written communication skills and demonstrable experience in a health care setting are essential. 

You must be prepared to complete additional competencies and you will be required to work rotational shifts. We do offer flexible working for staff. Burrator ward has the following shift pattern:

Long Day: 07:30-20:00

Night: 19:30 - 08:00

Main duties of the job

To assist with the delivery of care, planned and assessed by the Registered Nurse and multi-disciplinary team.

  • To promote and safeguard the well being of patients, their families and colleagues.
  • To share responsibility in the care and maintenance of all equipment on the ward and stock control.
  • Participate in unit research and audit work to include date collection
  • To respect the confidential information, in line with Trust policy Data Protection Act, obtained in the course of work and not disclose this information.
  • To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues and patients.
  • Report untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies to senior staff
  • To be familiar with Trust infection control, decontamination and cleanliness polices.
  • To undertake the decontamination and cleaning of department equipment. To participate in department cleaning.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing, care (i.e. washing, mouthcare, toileting, manual handling and mobility), recognising and meeting the specific needs of patients.
  • Prioritise own tasks under the direction of registered nurse.
  • To carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording and reporting all changes in patients condition to senior staff.
  • To support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts, recognising, recording and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
  • To support nutritional needs of patients by assisting with feeding and drinking, reporting on concerns about dietary intake to senior staff.
  • An awareness of skin integrity over pressure points, recognising and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
  • To recognise the importance of health education and teaching of patients and carers, and refer patients to senior staff
  • Document and sign for all observations and care given with counter signature from a registered practitioner.
  • To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimise his/her role within the work area.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience working within a large clinical setting
  • Ability to work in a team environment
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience working in a caring environment

  • Proven knowledge of working with hospital/ clinical based systems

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSEs Grade A-D/3-9 in Maths and English or Functional Skills level 1 in Maths and English
  • Plus, either NVQ level 2 in Health & Social Care or HCA UHP Level 2 or definitive evidence of working towards – 75% completed (or equivalent transferable qualification)
  • Or, Demonstrable equivalent experience (NVQ Level 2 equivalent) as a Healthcare Assistant in a Band 2 clinical role and agree to undertake the HCA UHP L2 course. Willing to undertake a competency-based assessment at interview.
  • Undertake and complete the Care Certificate training programme offered in-house

  • Care Certificate training

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels
  • Effective influencing skills: in general, and with senior health care professionals
  • Attention to detail
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work with national forums, inputting and verifying collated data in a timely and concise manner.
  • Ability to manoeuvre medium to heavy loads, which could be in excess of 25kg, in varying locations
