Job overview
Would you like to come a make a difference to the lives of women and babies during the perinatal period by joining our Smokefree Pregnancy Support team? The post holder will be an integral member of the team and provide tobacco harm reduction related treatment advice and support to women and birthing people who wish to stop smoking and reduce their harm from tobacco in pregnancy. In some instances, the post holder will also be required to support extended family members/carers in their journey to stop smoking, in a targeted effort to reduce health inequalities associated with smoking.
Families that are supported by the Smoking in Pregnancy Service might also be experiencing other complexities in their lives. The post holder will provide generalised support, advice, and signposting to specialist services in order to meet families individual needs.
The post holder will provide training for all maternity staff and act as a mentor to new starters. Some flexibility in the full-time position will be needed to deliver care/training and maintain the post holders own skills through training days. There will be guidance and standard operating procedures to follow, with these needing updating by the post holder as new evidence arises. Applications from non-smokers are welcomed and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will be supportive of Trust’s smoke free policy by acting as a champion or smoking reduction strategies.
Main duties of the job
Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications and e-cigarettes to pregnant women and their partners, both virtually and face to face.
2. Provide advice and support to maternity staff, including providing training to the multi-disciplinary inpatient and community teams to reduce harm from tobacco and to promote smoke free settings.
3. Ensure robust continuity of care planning for service users.
4. Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through the offer of healthy lifestyle advice and support, signposting to other services to provide holistic care, and supporting families to access other support.
5. Work with people (including staff, patients, and their families) using behaviour change science to improve their health.
6. Act as a smoke-free champion.
7. Help to facilitate smoke free environments.
8. Data monitoring, audit, and quality improvement

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES and AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
PLANNING AND ORGANISATION
• Ensure robust continuity of care planning for the patient’s ongoing specialist tobacco dependency treatment / stop smoking support for patients wishing to quit.
• Develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.
• To contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the service, including the completion of the minimum data set requirements. This will include following up people who do not attend for planned support.
• Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales.
• Work closely with the community stop smoking services, ensuring a smooth hand over of patient care, also receiving referrals from the stop smoking service for those who do not engage.
• Plan social media output with the digital maternity team on a rolling monthly basis and respond to queries that come into the service via social media channels.
• Ensure that the relevant equipment is provided and maintained on an agreed schedule. Report any failings of equipment or other environmental factors to the Maternity Day Assessment Unity Manager.
• Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, including providing advice on stop smoking medications and e-cigarettes, following recommended protocols and guidelines; working closely with the community stop smoking services and community pharmacists.

Person specification
Knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of providing healthcare, healthcare advice, or health promotion advice to patients or members of the public
- Experience of working with vulnerable families
Desirable criteria
- A minimum of 6 months experience working within maternity care
- Experience of delivering training to small groups of people
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE (or equivalent) grade C or above in English and Maths
- Diploma in health-related studies or equivalent experience
- NVQ Level 3 in a relevant field/discipline
Desirable criteria
- Smoking Cessation Training Level 2 or willing to undertake within three months of starting in post
- Specific training in health promotion and behaviour change interventions
Aptitude and abilities
Essential criteria
- Good knowledge and understanding of evidence-based practice in smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking, and the benefits of quitting on health inequalities
- Willing to undertake further education / training according to needs of role
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of audit, evaluation, and quality improvement
- Knowledge of principles of health promotion and health inequalities
Disposition, attitude, and motivation
Essential criteria
- Must be self-motivated and able to work under the direction of the Maternity Day Assessment Manager
- Willing to undertake further education / training according to needs of role
Desirable criteria
- Has the ability to work under minimal supervision
- Physically capable of demonstrating and participating in work related learning activities e.g. manual handling
