Specialist Senior Radiographer – ED Deputy and Reject Analysis

Would you like a job in the largest hospital in the South West as a Specialist ED Radiographer? Do you have strong clinical/ leadership skills in general radiography & want to develop an essential imaging service?

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team as a B6 specialist area radiographer in ED X-Ray Imaging. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic HCPC registered Radiographer to join our dynamic imaging team at UHPT. Applications are welcomed from radiographers with demonstrable post graduate NHS experience, sound current clinical proven knowledge of radiography and current clinical expertise across all areas of x-ray imaging.

The ED X-Ray Imaging service at UHPT encompasses a broad remit: UHPT is a regional trauma centre for a wide variety of patient pathways, providing an exemplary care to all levels of trauma call across the region. 

This role also has the X-Ray service line responsibility to oversee an effective Reject Analysis and future UTC projects for the X-Ray modality remit.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

As a specialist senior radiographer you would be expected to provide clinical excellence, liaise with all service users, lead service development, and manage the day-to-day organisation of the clinical area whilst consistently providing effective and efficient leadership. This role will be expected to provide support across the whole ED Xray Imaging team and deputise in the absence of the ED Lead Radiographer.

The department hosts undergraduate radiographers on placement from the University of Exeter and the University of Plymouth as well as training apprentice radiographers, so you will be expected to be actively involved in their training and supervision as part of your role, whilst supporting the wider team.  All candidates must be enthusiastic about teaching and supporting learners in the clinical environment.

This position carries a commitment to Agenda for Change compliant  7 day working at Derriford Hospital and peripheral sites. You will be expected to work flexible hours across the week.

  • To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support colleagues to do likewise.
  • Remain an active member of the clinical radiography team, carrying out the full range of radiographic duties to the standard required.
  • Maintenance of imaging competencies as essential for the role.
  • As a Senior Radiographer you are expected to be competent in the use of the Radiology Information System, Hospital Information systems, PACS, and all routine diagnostic techniques and equipment, using highly developed physical skills to provide images of diagnostic quality in a timely manner.
  • Interpret clinical information to support the requested examination. Follow departmental clinical protocols whilst employing professional judgement to ensure the most appropriate examination for the patient is carried out. You will be expected to query an examination if you believe clinical indications require it, giving advice to more junior members of staff where needed.
  • Undertake imaging examinations in your area within the Trust under our management, using highly developed physical skills to provide images of diagnostic quality in a timely manner, ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained. Be able to accurately position patients with minimum discomfort to facilitate accurate diagnostic images.
  • Use an extensive range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients/carers; to motivate, gain co-operation, to gain a satisfactory image at the first attempt. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating.
  • To empathise and reassure patients who are worried, anxious or reluctant to undergo the procedure by providing thoughtful and well-constructed responses to their and their carer’s questions. Patient groups will regularly include learning disabilities and those with cancer or lifelong conditions.
  • To participate in working parties developing policy and protocol changes, within UHPT Imaging, which will impact on all service users.
  • To ensure, as Senior Radiographer, that designated staff implement policy and service development changes.
  • To work with consultants and head of service in developing the strategic, operational and optimisation management of the imaging service for ED.
  • To regularly teach, train, supervise and performance manage junior radiographers, support workers, apprentices and students. This will include the use of formal appraisal and assessment documentation.
  • To comply with local confidentiality polices, child protection and vulnerable adult’s procedures.
  • Participate in providing a seven-day service (inclusive of bank holidays) for the imaging service provision as required.
  • There is a constant requirement to exert moderate physical effort when moving equipment and patients with and without the use of mechanical aids. Tasks include manoeuvring imaging equipment, supporting patients whilst positioning, assisting patients during transfers and static postures.
  • There will be frequent exposure to distressing and emotional circumstances and occasional exposure to traumatic incidents when working in imaging as part of the trauma team or carrying out mobile x-ray examinations on the wards and in theatre or within your specialist modality.
  • There is a daily requirement for prolonged periods of concentration with multi-tasking e.g. writing notes, communicating with team, telephone calls, with regular interruptions.

  • Demonstrable understanding of the physiological, psychological and social needs of all patients and their families.
