Screening and Fetal Medicine Lead Midwife

The role of the Screening and Fetal Medicine Lead Midwife is to ensure the provision and continuing effectiveness of the Antenatal and Newborn Screening and diagnosis programme for the Maternity Service. As part of a small multidisciplinary team, they will play a key role in coordinating the delivery of the fetal medicine service, providing specialist midwifery care and where required, assist in diagnostic procedures.

 

The Screening and Fetal Medicine Lead Midwife will be responsible for the day to day running of the Screening and Fetal Medicine service, collection and submission of evidence to demonstrate the department’s performance in meeting the National Screening Committee Standards, quality assurance and key performance indicators and will co-ordinate and implement processes, systems and fail safes to reduce risk in antenatal and newborn screening.

 

The post holder will provide expert clinical leadership through their demonstrable clinical expertise and knowledge base to provide specialist advice and education to service users and the multidisciplinary team regarding women with increased screening risk/fetal anomaly.

 

Also available as a 12 month secondment, with the possibility of becoming permanent.

 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

  • Act as a specialist in the field of antenatal and newborn screening and diagnosis, assisting and advising other health professionals in the care of women undergoing testing.

 

  • Lead the implementation of systems to ensure that every pregnant woman and newborn baby is offered all appropriate NHS funded screening programmes offered by the Trust within a programme that meets national standards.

 

  • Lead in the production and dissemination of standard multidisciplinary guidelines and policies which are evidence based in relation to antenatal and newborn screening.

  • Provide genetic counselling relating to the Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia programme and the Fetal Anomaly Programme.
  • Inform maternity service users of the results of diagnostic and genetic testing to patients.
  • Provide specialist midwifery care to maternity service users under the care of the Fetal Medicine team including assisting with clinical procedures where required.
  • Provide skilled and sensitive counselling to pregnant people and their partners concerning high risk results.
  • Ensure the smooth and effective handling of positive screening results in line with current protocols and practices.
  • Ensure submission of information of detected anomalies, both fetal and neonatal to the National Congenital Anomaly and Rare Disease Registration service (NCARDRS) and oversee appropriate follow up.
  • Actively participate in clinical research, quality improvement and audit and encourage others to do the same

  • Considerable demonstrable post registration experience with the ability to demonstrate effective consolidation of knowledge and practice
  • Previous demonstrable experience of Antenatal & Newborn Screening

  • Proven Specialist knowledge and demonstrable experience working in Screening and Fetal Medicine
  • Proven Evidence of working with Health Informatics, data analysis and reporting

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Midwife with significant post registration experience
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in knowledge
  • Mentorship course or equivalent

  • Masters qualification or equivalent experience
  • NIPE qualification
