Job overview

An exciting opportunity  is being offered for the successful applicant, to join a motivated, professional team, working within a busy new Ophthalmic Day Case Unit.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of care of the ophthalmic patient. They will be expected to carry out all relevant forms of patient care without direct supervision. They will provide the highest standard of nursing care to all patients undergoing treatment, contributing to the overall efficiency and development of the patient service.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing care by initiating and co-ordinating the assessment, planning and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence
  • Liaise, report and document any relevant nursing/patient needs with other health care professionals with ongoing responsibility for patient care, communicating changes as they occur.
  • Be competent in the use of complex equipment, including slit lamp, IOL master, keratometer. Teach and demonstrate safe use to new or junior staff, including medical staff
  • Maintain and continually develop in depth specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to the individual clinical area. 
  • Promote health education within the clinical area, advise patient, family and others in health promotion issues.
  • Pre-assessment clinics, including the measurement of patients eyes for accurate lens reading for surgery and consenting patients for cataract surgery
  • Supervise, assess, mentor and support all Health Care Professionals including bank and agency staff in the clinical setting.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to evidence based practice and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.
  • Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate and initiate appropriate training activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure that resources are used effectively and in accordance with agreed procedures.  
  • Maintain and continuously improve in depth specialist knowledge relevant to the clinical area which significantly contributes to the Trust’s stated objectives and aims.
  • Undertake evidence based practice for either developments relating to Trust work or opportunities for Trust involvement around health issues and contribute towards the continuing development of professional nursing practice
  • Increase the level of knowledge and skill within the Trust through sharing best practice and supporting others to develop their professional abilities.
  • Dissemination of knowledge through report writing, and reviewing, taking full responsibility for clinical accuracy and reliability and being sensitive to the wider implications of the dissemination.
  • Ensure that expertise within your area is seen as a resource within and outside the Trust and form working partnerships with other health and social care service providers.
  • Support team members to deliver on their objectives through offering advice, guidance and support as appropriate.

 

  • Assist other clinical areas within the Trust if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand.
  • May involve taking charge of the unit for a period of time in the absence of senior staff

 

  • Has an understanding of child protection issues and agrees to undertake additional training

 

  • Maintain clinical competencies and keeps a record of any training.

 

  • Participate in the weekend on call rota for out of hours emergency ophthalmic patients requiring surgical intervention
    • Comply with the codes of professional conduct set out by the professional body of which registration is required for the post.

     

    • Ensure they are familiar with the Risk Management Framework, follow policies, procedures and safe systems of work, make known any hazards or risks that they identify and take all necessary actions to reduce risk. 

     

    • Ensure the welfare and safety of children within their care. This includes staff who come into contact with children and families in the course of their work as well as those staff who have a specific role with children and families.

     

    • Ensure they attend Child Protection training at the appropriate level within the specified time frame.

     

    • Staff must comply with Safeguarding Policies and Procedures in order to promote safeguarding and prevent abuse to vulnerable people using Trust services.

     

    • Maintain the prevention and control of infection and fully comply with all current Trust Infection Control policies and procedures.

     

    • Take responsibility for any records that they create or use in the course of their duties, in line with the Public Records Act and be aware that any records created by an employee of the NHS are public records and may be subject to both legal and professional obligations.

    • Assessing risks and implementing the necessary actions to minimise these risks within their sphere of responsibility. They must also enable staff to attend the relevant statutory and essential training.
