StR Higher in Plastic Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Trust registrar

Job overview

We are a dynamic and innovative department, seeking to appoint a Trust StR Higher (ST3+ equivalent) to retain our complement of junior grades. This is a fixed term appointment for 12 months to cover maternity leave.

Derriford Hospital in Plymouth sits between the coast and Dartmoor allowing doctor’s optimal work/life balance in a truly beautiful setting. The low cost of living allows junior doctors to live in flats with a sea view, within easy access of the hospital.

Successful candidates would expect to gain exposure to a broad set of plastic surgery disciplines. It is a supportive environment for those transitioning to the registrar grade from senior house officer. We have a consultant led on-call service with two senior handovers per day.

Main duties of the job

To provide Trust SpR level support to the Plastic Surgery team to include in and out of hours cover: outpatient and inpatient activities: clinics, surgery and ward cover.

With our broad subspecialty exposure, we also can support senior trainees entering the final stages of training and wish to sit the FRCS (Plast) examination. We offer support for those seeking to gain a National Training Number, local registrars and those who aim to enter the specialist register via the CESR pathway.  Expansion of the Consultant numbers now provides a high level of supervision and training across a range of elective sub specialties. These include burns, trauma, breast reconstruction, hand surgery, sarcoma surgery, paediatric plastic surgery, skin malignancy, and head and neck surgery.

The weekday on-call service in the day (08:00 – 17:30) is supported through a team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners taking referrals and a Physician’s Associate assisting in ward tasks. This system frees up time for additional training opportunities.
