Job overview
The Plymouth Cardiovascular Centre wishes to appoint a full time Consultant in Vascular Surgery. The post-holder will be based at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth (Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust). Candidates are expected to be accredited in the specialty of vascular surgery and to have completed appropriate training.
We will be a team of six full time surgeons working in a tertiary vascular centre performing all types of major vascular and endovascular operations and procedures. One of these surgeons also performs renal transplant surgery and several provide surgery for vascular access.
Main duties of the job
We perform all types of elective and emergency Vascular Surgery including:
- carotid surgery (urgent and elective),
- complex aortic surgery for aneurysms and occlusive disease (open and endovascular including thoraco-abdominal aneurysm repair with cardiac bypass),
- upper and lower limb bypass including distal bypass,
- renal transplant (deceased and live donor),
- cervical and first rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome and axillary vein thrombosis,
- thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis and digital ischaemia sympathectomy,
- renal access surgery (fistula),
- venous procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Each vascular surgeon has one full day of operating per week and access to half day lists for ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy of varicose veins. We have a dedicated Vascular theatre for elective and emergency procedures.
We have a team of Vascular Technologists who provide a full range of duplex services including carotid duplex, aortic scanning, upper limb duplex for acute and chronic conditions, lower limb duplex for acute and chronic conditions and vein mapping for surgery.
Many clinic patients receive a one-stop service with a duplex prior to their clinic appointment. We have one full time vascular nurse who runs nurse-led ulcer clinics, varicose vein and claudication clinics and has successfully developed our ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy service for varicose veins which is our primary mode of treatment for this condition. He has an active role in Research in the unit and also attends weekly clinics as part of the National Aneurysm Screening Programme.
We have a primary Cardiothoracic Critical Care facility for complex cases and non-ruptured aneurysms on Level 6 opposite the Cardiothoracic and Vascular theatre complex and a General Intensive Care Unit on Level 4 which takes our ruptured aneurysms and other multi-organ complex cases.
A one hour Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting takes place every week in x-ray which includes all of the Vascular Surgeons and Vascular juniors, all Vascular Interventional Radiologists, Vascular Technologists and one Vascular anaesthetist.
The Vascular Unit at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is recognised as a Training Centre for trainees as part of the new Speciality Training Programme for Vascular Surgery. As such we currently have one Senior vascular trainee from the older system and one early Specialist Trainee from the newer training system.
