Our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) is a busy Level 1 unit providing 10 cots in total comprising of 2 HDU cots and 4 Special Care cot’s, with a 4 bedded Transitional Care Service.
We provide care to babies and their families from 32 weeks gestation, but also provide stabilisation for babies born before this gestation, or critically ill term neonates prior to retrieval by the Peninsula Neonatal Transport Team.
Main duties of the job
- We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, innovative nurse to work effectively within the ward team.
- You should possess an RN, RSCN, RN Child, or RM qualification.
- Completion of the Neonatal Modules is desirable although a willingness to work towards achieving them is acceptable.
- Experience of working within a neonatal environment is desirable and this can include recent experience gained as a student within a Neonatal Placement.
We also consider applications from nurses working within adult areas who wish to bring their transferable skills into a Neonatal setting. We provide a supportive, friendly environment with the neonate and their family at the centre of everything we do. The unit operates an 11.5hr shift system covering days/nights/weekends/bank holidays.

- Responsible for the delivery of effective, high quality nursing care in accordance with local, service line and Trust policies and guidelines with the support of the Senior Nursing Team
- Participate in South West Neonatal Network service development
- Participate in and demonstrate evidence based practice

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First Level Qualification - RN (Child), RSCN, RN (Adult), RGN, RM
- Current registration with NMC
Desirable criteria
- Degree in Nursing
- Neonatal qualification in specialism or willingness to undertake
- Approved Neonatal Life Support Course
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
Desirable criteria
- Recent Neonatal experience in either a Level 1, 2 or 3
- Enhanced Clinical Practice Skills, IV competent
- Experience of teaching and mentorship
Special Experience
Desirable criteria
- Breast feeding course
- Child Protection training Level 3 (Level 2 considered but must be prepared to do Level 3 when in post)
