Job overview
A great opportunity has risen for a Registered Nurse to join our ward team at Tavistock Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth.
The post holder will be responsible for implementing, co-ordinating and delivering effective, high quality care for the pre-operative patient, Following a client-centred model of practice and ensuring the area of work runs smoothly and efficiently.
To make appropriate verbal and written assessment to gain information relating to a patients surgery.
To act on such assessments in preparing and supporting the patient’s pathway, referring to outside specialist help if required
Previous demonstrable experience within health care of the elderly care is an advantage but not essential as full training will be given.
The successful candidate will work as part of the nursing team to provide high standards of care to ensure a positive experience to all patients.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
· Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and co-ordinating the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence. This includes all aspects of care from admission to discharge.
· Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multi-disciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patient care as they occur.
· Engaging and interacting with carers and family, encouraging them to be actively involved in patients care planning as outlined in ward / unit philosophy.
· Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.
· Assisting other clinical areas if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand.
· Supervising and directing Health Care Assistants with their daily workload.
· Communicating with patients, relatives and outside agencies as appropriate, within the confines of the Data Protection Act and Patient Confidentiality.
· Implementing and sharing good infection control practice.
· Managing the Clinical risk relating to individuals or a group of patients care, reporting issues to appropriate senior staff.
· In some circumstances take charge of the ward in the absence of more senior staff.

• Supervising and directing Health Care Assistants with their daily workload.
• Communicating with patients, relatives and outside agencies as appropriate, within the

• Undertaking manual handling assessments and ensuring identified actions are met.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven evidence of recent CPD
- Proven knowledge of and ability to apply evidence –based practice
- Proven ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinical care and act accordingly
Desirable criteria
- Proven ability to demonstrate managerial or leadership potential
- Able to cannulate & administer I.V Iron.
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner with the NMC/HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Trainer/assessor/educator or relevant educational course e.g. Cert Ed or ENB 998/C&G 730 or equivalent •
- Computer literate
- Educated to Diploma or Degree level or equivalent
Apptitude and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Effective verbal & non-verbal communication skills, effective influencing skills. • Organisational skills, able to work as team leader.
