Job overview

Are you an enthusiastic Healthcare Support Worker with an interest and passion for nutrition?  We are recruiting a Healthcare Support Worker to join our Nutrition Support team working in a small team of specialist nurses to provide support and training to patients receiving nutrition support. It is a varied role, including assisting consultants and CNS’ in clinics, supporting patients with Nutritional needs as both inpatients, Outpatients, and community, and working with other professionals such as Pharmacists and Dieticians. 

 

The Nutrition team provide training, support and guidance to patients receiving enteral or parenteral nutrition, arranging/providing training, ensuring the ancillaries are available. The post holder will also support with answering queries and troubleshooting.

Main duties of the job

To undertake basic nursing activities for patients under the responsibility of a registered nurse.

To contribute to the provision of support for patients receiving nutrition support.

Participate in the development of self and others.

Work with the registered nursing staff.

Assist with the placement, training and ongoing care of patients who require feeding via a tube

To be a flexible member of the team working in all areas of the department as and when required.

Pick up messages and signpost to the correct clinician.

Order nutrition supplies from stock control.

Participate in enteral/parenteral clinics.

Ours is a small multi professional team consisting of a Consultant Gastroenterologist, Nutrition nurse specialists, Dietitian, Pharmacist & pharmacy technician. 

We are based on Level 8 Hutchings outpatient unit, working closely with the colorectal, stoma and outpatient teams to provide excellent standards of care and streamlining patient care.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent or demonstrable Band 2 experience and agree to undertake NVQ level 3
Desirable criteria
  • Band 3 HCA experience
  • Demonstrable experience in a coaching role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience in a caring environment/working with people
  • To demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Basic understanding of NHS issues
Desirable criteria
  • Basic understanding of enteral feeding (nasogastric, jejunal, PEG or RIG)

Specific Skills

Essential criteria
  • Basic IT skills in email and maintaining of PAS
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to manage own workload
  • Demonstrate a caring, compassionate and friendly attitude
  • Perform routine tube care (balloon water exchange/advance and rotate), removal of sutures and record in nursing notes.
  • Able to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • Able to present factual information and refer questions to others, where appropriate
  • Be able to work flexibly at short notice and at busy times in order to provide an appropriate service.
  • Full UK Driving licence
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of previous knowledge of hospital computer systems
