Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Torbay and South Devon is a fantastic place to live and the Critical Care Department in Torbay Hospital is a great place to work. We invite applications for appointment to a substantive Intensive Care Medicine Consultant post at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.

Additional speciality and sub-speciality expertise is desirable (such as in acute medicine, emergency medicine, anaesthesia, perioperative medicine etc.) as are wider skills in service improvement, audit and governance, research, medical education, management and leadership.

Main duties of the job

Our on-call commitment has evolved to provide the highest quality consultant-delivered service whilst supporting a healthy work-life balance. Intensivists equally share a 1 in 11 non-resident on call rota, delivery of daytime ICU sessions, and sessions supporting the nurse led and delivered critical care outreach service (consultant outreach sessions currently Monday to Friday afternoons). There are opportunities for additional non-ICU based clinical sessions e.g. in anaesthesia, acute medicine, emergency medicine, respiratory medicine or renal medicine by arrangement with the relevant teams. We welcome enquires about this aspect of the appointment

Working for our organisation

Why Work With Us

Torbay hospital has a reputation as a friendly working environment with excellent trainee feedback and is a national innovator in many areas including critical care rehabilitation, day surgery and peri-operative medicine.  Outside of the hospital, the area offers a great lifestyle with beautiful countryside from the stunning South Devon coastline with its sandy beaches and pebble coves to the rugged peaks of Dartmoor and the rolling South Hams.  Please see our attached video link for a taster of what work-life balance means for many of us.

The hospital is part of the Building a Brighter Future wave of major rebuild and refurbishment, which is expected to include a new theatres build and will place a transformative digital environment at the heart of patient care.  We have a state-of-the-art 14 bedded intensive care unit which is completely paperless using the Philips Intellispace Critical Care and Anaesthesia (ICCA) clinical information system. Our critically ill patients also benefit from a nationally recognised fully integrated multi-professional rehabilitation and follow-up service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

For new substantive consultants the 10 PA full time job plan for this post will initially include 2.5 SPAs. We welcome LTFT applications and enquiries.

Applicants will need to be on the GMC Specialist Register, or with a  CCT/EU equivalent certification before commencing this post. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full-time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

This post is for an equal clinical work load with all the existing ICU consultants in delivering the core ICU clinical service.

All on-call and day time ICU DCC (direct clinical care) is dedicated purely to ICU. The current rota is 1:11 for weekday night (1800 – 0800) and weekend on-call ICU duties (maximum 24 hour continuous on-call), an 11 week rolling rota for ICU week-day sessions (0800-1800) and outreach sessions (currently 1300-1800, usually preceding a week night on-call). Additional PAs are potentially available in clinical specialities of Anaesthetics, Acute Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and Renal Medicine following discussion and agreement with the relevant clinical teams and leaders and suitability of the candidate for the post.
