Job overview
This post offers an opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic candidate to expand their urological experience. The post is ideally suited for a Urology Trainee to augment their portfolio to apply for ST Training in Urology. A successful International Candidate will be supported in their application to enrol with the International Postgraduate Deanery (IPD) of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and will have an Assigned Educational Supervisor.
The postholder will be required to support the urology team caring for a wide range of urological conditions.
The multidisciplinary team provide care for paediatric urology, peno-scrotal surgery, benign complex urology, benign prostate surgery with TURP and UROLIFT, endourological stone surgery with URS and Lasertripsy, TP prostate biopsies and TURBT.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will have responsibility for the care of patients at urological trainee level including ward rounds, supervision of junior grades and on-call duties. The appointee will share on-call with Royal Devon University Hospital which will include weekends and nights. This offers the appointee additional training and developmental opportunities at another local Trust.
The daytime on-call commitment is shared with the urology SPR trainee, a urology fellow and a urology core trainee. The emphasis is on the provision of safe and efficient management of urological emergencies which are mainly dealt with in our dedicated surgical assessment unit. Operative duties include supervised operating and assisting in theatres. There are 2 supervised out-patient clinic sessions per week. The post provides ample opportunity to gain urological surgical skills in core urology and endourological procedures. The post also includes administrative duties associated with the care of the urology patients and the running of the department.
There will be opportunity to teach medical students from our 2 affiliated medical schools Peninsula Medical School and University of Exeter Medical School.
Attendance and participation in the monthly M+M and governance meeting is expected. Attendance at local and regional training is supported.
Working for our organisation
The department of Urology at Torbay Hospital consists of 5 Urological Surgeons, 1 Urology SpR, 2 Urology Fellows, a Urology Core Trainee, 3 F2s and 3 F1s. The Team also has 6 Cancer Nurse Specialists, 2 advanced Surgical Care Practitioner, as well as 5 Urology Nurse Specialists who independently see patients, including flexible cystoscopy clinics, urodynamics and uro-oncology.
The Urology Team work closely with interventional radiology and the uro-oncology teams based at Torbay Hospital. There is also a close relationship with the Urology Area Network (UAN), as well as University of Plymouth Faculty and the University of Exeter Medical School.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We provide outpatient services in our new Urology Investigation Unit in Paignton with a dedicated TP Biopsy Suite, flexible cystoscopy including BOTOX service, dedicated 2WW clinics, TULA, paediatric urology clinics, nurse led urodynamic service, nurse led erectile dysfunction service and multidisciplinary joint urology oncology clinics.
There will be an opportunity to be involved in teaching and training as well as audit and QI projects. This will allow the successful candidate to expand their portfolio.
Strong support is provided for career development. The post allows for 1 day per week of academic / clinical research. There is also the opportunity to acquire a PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) if the post holder wishes. The post holder will have an educational and clinical supervisor to facilitate career progression. The postholder is expected to attend the HST specialist urology training sessions organized by the Deanery.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration with License to Practice
- Successful completion of MRCS at time of interview
- Experience in core Urology, including skills of cystoscopy
- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at relevant courses e.g ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills or equivalent CCrISP
- Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements e.g degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements
- Early operative experience in Urology
