Job overview

Torquay Health and Well-Being Team are recruiting for a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker to join our large but supportive team who enjoys mentoring team members and students, and is passionate about delivering quality care to the housebound patients. 

We work in an integrated way with allied health care professionals within the locality therefore, as a Healthcare Support Worker within an integrated team, you will work alongside and across the community teams which includes: Community Nursing, Intermediate Care and Community Matrons.

We are a motivated and caring team that are passionate about delivering high quality care to the housebound patients of Torquay and work as part of multi-disciplinary team and in partnership with primary care and secondary care.

Main duties of the job

  • Working as a team to assist and perform clinical responsibilities as delegated by our qualified nursing staff, including though not limited to:
    • Observing, monitoring and recording patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations and weight.
    • As well as providing personalised care such as infection prevention and control, food, personal hygiene and overall reassurance, comfort and safety. 
    • Where appropriate, you may be asked to conduct ECG Recordings, monitoring blood sugar, provide Stoma and Catheter care, Venepuncture, and Cannulation.
  • Administrative duties such as answer the telephone, take messages and refer to the Staff Nurse for instructions, to take part as requested in ward/unit meetings, encouraging effective communications between other staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • An ability to effectively communicate routine information to patients/carers where co-operation is required and where there may be barriers to understanding
  • An ability to communicate and liaise within a range of settings to other health professionals, agencies and voluntary organisations including:

Responsibility and accountability

  • Assisting trained nurses in delivering a high standard of holistic nursing care to patients in the home environment, within the dimensions of the post
  • Communicate and liaise effectively with patients, carers and members of the primary health care team including statutory and voluntary organisations
  • Implementing delegated, planned and appropriate aspects of nursing and social care unsupervised and being responsible for informing the Community Nurse Team Leader/Nurse in charge of observations relating to patient care.

  • Contributing to the maintenance of the Community Nurse Team agreed philosophy, aims and objectives, participating in Team Development

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience
Desirable criteria
  • Care certificate
  • English & Mathematics at GSCE grade A-C (9-4) or level 2 functional skills

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in a care environment or able to demonstrate a caring nature/ life experienc
  • Understands the need for strict confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Working knowledge of complex care needs of some individuals/families including Safeguarding Children & Adults, Domestic Abuse and Mental Health
