Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Trust Grade in Adult Critical Care Medicine for an August Start date. The successful candidate will participate in the provision of intensive care services as part of a close-knit, multi-disciplinary team on our state of the art 14 bedded intensive care unit, under appropriate direct and indirect clinical supervision. We currently provide 6 Level 3 and 4 Level 2 patient equivalents for a wide range of surgical and medical patients and also manage 2 level 1.5 “Higher Care” beds for high risk orthopaedic admissions. The Torbay hospital, catchment includes areas of significant poverty. We therefore care for above average numbers of admissions related to alcohol and substance abuse.

This post would be ideally suited to doctors who have completed foundation or core training competencies and are either wishing to take time out of training, or have not yet secured an ongoing training post.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for supporting admission, discharge and day to day management of the patients in our mixed ICU and HDU unit under supervision of the Consultant in charge of the Intensive Care Unit. Clinical Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to)

Performing daily reviews on ICU patients with presentation of relevant findings during ward rounds and to the MDT meeting.

Admission, stabilisation and formulation of initial management plans for critically unwell adults.

·         Competent management of general medical administration, i.e. note taking, record keeping, ordering and reviewing investigations, timely completion of discharge summaries, etc.

·         Providing a clear, concise “handover” to relieving colleagues before going off duty.

·         The review and stabilisation of critically unwell patients in the wider hospital with close communication with the duty intensive care or critical care outreach consultant. This can also include assisting with the management of critically ill children prior to transfer to the regional PICU.

·         Attendence and support of hospital cardiac arrest and trauma calls (adult and paediatric).

·         Close liaison with the ICU nurse in-charge, bed-side nurses and wider allied professional MDT.

During your time in post you may also be expected/have opportunity to:

·         Develop skills to competently initiate and manipulate invasive and non-invasive ventilation, use vasopressors, insert CVC and Arterial Lines and the transfer the critically unwell patient (intra and inter-hospital).

·         Support the learning and development of other members of the critical care team (inc undergraduates)

·         Recruit patients to active research studies supported locally (e.g. UK-ROX, MARCH). As a department, we encourage research interests and would actively support the successful applicant to undertake an associate PI role.

·         Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement.

·         Contribute to weekly journal club and in-house intensive care education programme.
