Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Community Maternity Support Worker with an existing NVQ 3  (or equivalent) qualification as identified on the person specification to work within a community midwifery team based within Harbourside team. Although based in Torquay, you will also provide cross cover to the other midwifery teams in the Torbay and South Devon locality.

Your role will encompass supporting the integrated midwifery service with the provision of safe, effective and evidence based care to all women and their families using the maternity services. This will include clinical activities, admin and clerical duties and housekeeping, whilst at all times liaising with the Midwives. The clinical responsibilities involve support of new parents, parent education, feeding support, venepuncture & undertaking new-born blood spot tests.

Main duties of the job

  • To liaise with other members of multidisciplinary team e.g. Health Visitors, GP’s, Children’s Centres regarding mothers and babies, respecting confidentiality at all times
  • Assist in the provision of high-quality care to mothers and babies
  • To undertake tasks and duties for which midwifery training is not required on both mothers and babies and report any deviations from normal parameters to the midwife
  • To carry out additional tasks as delegated by the Registered Midwife once appropriate training has been given (see responsibility)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • As a member of a multi-professional team contribute to effective communication and its relevance to effective care provision including sensitive information and bereavement support.
  • Assist in the provision of high quality care to mothers and babies
  • To undertake tasks and duties for which midwifery training is not required on both mothers and babies and report any deviations from normal parameters to the midwife.
  • Provide direct care to women and babies as directed by the midwife, reporting any deviation from normal to the midwife
  • Working to relevant Trust procedures, standards and policies ensuring safe care at all times

Ability to travel efficiently around the Bay is important in order to carry out your duties (e.g. Full driving licence and vehicle).

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 NVQ/ Apprenticeship or equivalent
  • Level 2 safeguarding children training
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a Maternity Unit
  • Breast feeding training
  • Safeguarding children level 3

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to act as mentor to MSWs recruited into service
  • Uses appropriate moving and manual handling techniques, as part of daily activities assisting women during postnatal period.
  • Manual dexterity to undertake venepuncture
  • IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Training to undertake baseline observations
  • Training to undertake phlebotomy mothers and neonatal blood spot

  • Experience in a caring environment in or outside of the workplace
  • Experience in a customer focused environment
  • Understands the concept of confidentiality and standards of conduct and care
