NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST3-5)
Job overview
We are offering an exciting ST3+ / Registrar‑level role within our dynamic General Surgery service, with excellent exposure to Colorectal and Upper GI Surgery. The successful candidate will enjoy a varied timetable including regular clinics, high‑quality theatre sessions, and a manageable 1:10 on‑call rota. For those looking to expand their portfolio, endoscopy training is available, providing a fantastic opportunity to build skills and strengthen future applications for higher surgical training.
Main duties of the job
This post offers a vibrant and varied timetable, typically including 2–3 theatre sessions, 1–2 clinics, and protected research time for those keen to build their academic portfolio. While based within Colorectal and Upper GI, you’ll also gain hands‑on experience across General Surgery and Vascular, ensuring a broad and well‑rounded training environment.
Every 10th week you’ll take part in a dedicated Hot Week, delivering emergency surgical care within a structured, consultant‑supported team — an ideal opportunity to sharpen acute decision‑making skills.
The role builds on your CT1–2 foundation and provides excellent exposure to both elective and emergency GI surgery. You’ll join the 1:10 on‑call rota, access regular emergency lists, and contribute to the department’s audit, research and publication output. All registrars rotate across teams and work within compliant, trainee‑friendly shift patterns.

Every 1 in 10 weeks you’ll lead the Hot Week emergency service — a well‑structured, team‑based model that provides exceptional experience in acute surgical care.
You’ll be part of the 1:10 on‑call rota, with regular access to GI emergency and elective lists, and will be encouraged to participate in audit, research and publication. All registrars work across teams within compliant, supportive shift patterns.
