Job overview

As a Registered Nurse working in the Gynaecology Clinic ,within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, you will be enthusiastic about women’s health, with the vision and passion to optimise high quality patient care.

The role of the Nurse Colposcopist is to  provide a Nurse Led Colposcopy Service and care for women attending with abnormal smear results and abnormalities of the Cervix or Vulva. To assess, diagnose, treat and review patient care and monitor patients until the abnormality is resolved. To ensure that all patients are cared for in a safe environment using evidence-based patient centred care.

To work as part of the multidisciplinary team and provide guidance, support and teaching to students, junior doctors and all the Colposcopy team.

You will need to enjoy working within an evolving service. There will be an expectation that you will be prepared to support learners within the department. Working as part of a multidisciplinary, professional team to assess care needs, and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care and possess excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as Lead Nurse for the Colposcopy Unit and take responsibility in the running and organisation of the Colposcopy Service.
  • Work as an independent accredited Colposcopist having completed the BSCCP Colposcopy training and maintain accreditation whilst working as a Colposcopist.
  •  Act as an expert clinically based Nurse Practitioner to assess, diagnose, treat and review patients referred to the Colposcopy Service.
  •  Undertake Nurse Led Colposcopy Clinics and practice to agreed standards and protocols set out by the BSCCP/NHS Document 20 and the RCOG.
  • Be able to screen, diagnose and treat all stages of CIN and refer to other experts when necessary.
  • Be able to work within a multidisciplinary team including Colposcopy, Gynaecology, Gynaecological Oncology, Histopathology and Cytology to provide a high standard of clinical care in line with local and national guidelines.
  • Be responsible for providing information, advice and support to women attending Colposcopy.
  •  Work alongside and support all members of the Colposcopy and Gynaecology team.
  • Be involved in the review of clinical services as appropriate i.e. by Audit.
  • Provide teaching and supervision to qualified and unqualified staff.
  •  Contribute to the overall good of the service by being a positive role model and treat all staff, service users and visitors with courtesy and kindness

Knowledge and experience

  • Post registration experience in Gynaecology
  • Experience working as a nurse colposcopist and understanding of NHSCSP document 20 and local guidelines
  • Able to manage own caseload
  • Understanding of audit and quality assurance process
Desirable criteria
  • Able to perform LLETZ procedures
