Therapeutic Radiographer Band 6 - Specialist Practitioner

NHS AfC: Band 6

Job overview

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are seeking two Therapeutic Radiographers to join our high-performing, patient-focused radiotherapy service as Specialist Practitioners.

This is an outstanding opportunity for ambitious, forward-thinking radiographers to advance their careers within a dynamic, research-active department delivering a broad and sophisticated range of radiotherapy techniques, including Lung and Bone SABR. Our service has a strong reputation for clinical excellence and active participation in both commercial and non-commercial clinical trials, ensuring patients benefit from cutting-edge treatments.

You will be joining at a transformative and exciting phase of service development. Our department is at the forefront of innovation, with:

  • The implementation of Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) across both linear accelerators and the CT simulator
  • The go-live of a new electronic patient record system
  • The commissioning of a new, state-of-the-art Treatment Planning System

As a Band 6 Specialist Practitioner, you will play a key role in delivering advanced radiotherapy techniques, supporting service development, and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and excellence. You will be empowered to take ownership of your professional growth, supported by a department that is deeply committed to education, training, and career progression.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver safe, accurate, and high-quality radiotherapy treatment as part of the linear accelerator team.
  • Rotate through pre-treatment areas, including RT-CT and pre-treatment data entry, ensuring precision and efficiency throughout the patient pathway.
  • Plan and deliver radiotherapy across a broad range of tumour sites, maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice.
  • Support the Team Leader in the day-to-day coordination of patient workflow, contributing to the effective organisation and management of clinical workload.
  • Work flexibly in line with service demands, including extended hours, weekends, and Bank Holidays.
  • Provide consistently exceptional, patient-centred care, ensuring compassion, dignity, and professionalism at all times.

Working for our organisation

You will be joining a friendly, supportive, and highly professional multi-disciplinary team, widely recognised for its kindness, collaboration, and commitment to excellence in patient care.

Our radiotherapy department is well-equipped with modern technology, including:

  • Two matched Elekta Versa linear accelerators
  • Mosaiq Oncology Management System (recently upgraded)
  • Pinnacle Treatment Planning System (TPS)
  • Limbus AI organ-at-risk outlining software
  • Canon Aquilion CT Scanner

We are proud to have a range of specialist roles within the team, including a Support and Information Radiographer, Urology Specialist Radiographer, and Colorectal/Gynaecology Specialist Radiographers, all of whom are independent prescribers.

The department has a strong culture of innovation and research. We have:

  • Contributed to an award-winning late effects service
  • A dedicated Research Radiographer embedded within the Oncology Research & Development team
  • Active participation in clinical trials, supporting early adoption of advancements in radiotherapy to ensure patients receive the most up-to-date treatments available

Looking ahead, we have exciting developments planned, including the commissioning of a new Treatment Planning System and progression towards back-to-back linear accelerator replacements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for individuals who demonstrate clinical expertise, professionalism, and a genuine passion for patient-centred care. You will thrive in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment and be motivated to contribute to innovation and service advancement.

In return, you will join a compassionate, skilled, and forward-thinking team that values its people as much as its patients. Based in the stunning surroundings of South Devon, this role offers not only professional fulfilment but also an exceptional quality of life.
