Job overview

Part time  B7 Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist  specialising in working with young people who have complex needs.  

We are recruiting an experienced Speech and Language Therapist with specialist skills to join Children and Family Health Devon at an exciting time where innovative practice and cross discipline pathways are being developed and rolled out with dedicated locality and county-wide professional teams. The advertised post will be based in the South Devon and Torbay locality and will contribute to leadership of Speech and Language therapy across the integrated pathway county wide.

The role will include speech and language assessment and intervention for children and young people with significant communication difficulties, often those with a complex medical history who usually access education via special school provision in the locality.

Main duties of the job

  • Work within the designated pathway to support Speech and Language Therapists working across and other integrated pathways.
  • Provide specialist SLT assessment, advice and interventions to children, young people and their families and to hold a caseload of children with complex needs.  
  • Provide case management of an identified caseload of children and young people with highly complex long-term conditions and complex needs by utilising and promoting evidence-based care.
  • Act as Clinical Specialist for complex needs across the Torbay, South and West Devon area , to lead, plan, co-ordinate and provide a highly specialist speech and language therapy service  to include assessment, diagnosis, advice, treatment and staff training.
  • To provide clinical supervision and line management to other Speech and Language Therapists under the leadership of the postholder.
  • To work alongside  colleagues in special schools, specialist community settings, mainstream schools and other community settings offering joint visits and second opinions in the field of early years complex needs 
  • To plan, implement and evaluate highly specialist training courses for speech and language therapists, other professionals from Health, Social Services and Education, including teachers.
  • The management and organisation of a specific, personal highly specialist caseload, including complex cases, independently as a fully autonomous practitioner.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Relevant AAC competencies
  • Demonstrates relevent experience with an AAC caseload
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Registered Member of Health Care Professions Council
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Additional specialist training in AAC
  • Demonstrates relevant experience with an ASD caseload
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates relevant experience wih complex needs caseload
  • Post graduate leadership certificate
  • MSc in relevant clinical area
  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks
  • Active Member of RCSLT Hubs
