Job overview
We are seeking an experienced nurse with expertise in caring for women to join the Torbay Pregnancy Advisory Service.

Main duties of the job
You will play a key role in the clinical assessment and referral process for individuals seeking termination of pregnancy, providing specialist, person-centred care tailored to each patient’s needs.
This includes the assessment, planning, and implementation of care in line with best practice and current guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will have excellent interpersonal skills and function effectively within nursing, multidisciplinary, and multi-agency teams. They will receive and communicate information regarding client care, organisational developments, peer support groups, and clinical supervision.

Communicate highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information in an understandable form to patients, including delivering positive or difficult health results that may impact lifestyle and relationships.

Assist with rota adjustments in the absence of the Advanced Nurse Specialist, including flexibility in own working hours to cover clinics.

Analyse complex problems structurally while working under pressure.

Make judgements when patients decline EPU follow-up, recommending the safest course of action.

Be accountable for own professional actions as the lead specialist for ToPAS.

Provide professional supervision to junior staff, including junior nurses, healthcare assistants, and assistant practitioners.

Review patients presenting post-procedure to assess for complications; refer to medical or gynaecology teams as necessary.

Refer patients to Early Pregnancy Unit for further assessment or monitoring.

Refer to other agencies if pregnancy exceeds 13 weeks + 6 days gestation.

Report equipment faults or breakages to medical electronics promptly.

Ensure adequate stock and supplies of treatment medications for ToPAS procedures.

Assist with the setup and cleaning of work areas.

Accountable for own professional actions while working autonomously.

Supervise and direct support staff.

Liaise with senior medical staff to manage complex cases.

Deputise for the Advanced Nurse Specialist (Band 7) in their absence.

Enter clinical information accurately into electronic patient record systems.

Input ultrasound report information on radiology systems.

Write reports or referrals to other professionals as required.

Check and process laboratory results when needed
Person specification
Essential
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse Adult or Registered Midwife, with current NMC registration. Educated to Degree level.
- Safeguarding Children Level 3
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
- Dealing with occasional highly distressing or emotional circumstances. Dealing with distressed clients.
Desirable criteria
- E-Learning for Health Modules: Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion; Termination of Pregnancy (can be completed as part of role induction).
- Experience of staff management
- Non-medical prescriber V3000 qualification

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
