Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a BSc Degree Podiatry apprentice to join the team and 'learn why they earn'. We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated individual.  The apprentice will be required to provide assessment, treatment and interventions for our high risk caseload within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, whilst being supported to undertake the Podiatry degree apprenticeship..

The person will combine working 4 days a week across a range of clinics, hospital and health centres and homes across Torbay and South Devon and undertaking academic study with the University of Plymouth.

Ability to travel around the district as a car owner/driver is essential to be able to undertake home visits.

The post holder will have clinical responsibility for delivering high quality care to a caseload across the Torbay and South Devon area and will be working closely with other community healthcare workers and provider agencies within a variety of care settings including community clinics, domiciliary work , care homes and contribute to the development of the podiatry team.

Main duties of the job

Be responsible for the management and treatment of a caseload of patients across a variety of locations within Torbay and South Devon area, providing a comprehensive assessment of podiatric need, relevant health education, planned podiatric care packages and referral to other health care professionals as required.

To be committed to and undertake the BSc podiatry degree.

To provide high standards of treatment and professionalism and to continue to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care

The podiatry department consists of 51 clinical comprising of Head of Service, Team Leads, Specialist podiatrists, podiatrists, assistant practitioners and clinical support staff .  We also have eight administrative staff.

We are an extremely supportive team and aim to innovatively deliver first class lower limb and foot health preventative care across South Devon.   We strive to achieve better outcomes for our patients  whilst we also actively promote development opportunities for our staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be responsible for the management and treatment of a caseload of patients across a variety of locations within Torbay and South Devon area, providing a comprehensive assessment of podiatric need, relevant health education, planned podiatric care packages and referral to other health care professionals as required.

You will be expected to attend the University of Plymouth BSc apprenticeship programme, combining learning with clinical duties.

To ensure effective communication with patients, relatives and carers 
concerning assessment outcomes, treatment options and prognosis where there may be barriers to understanding due to learning difficulties, illness and high anxiety.

 Ensure effective communications are maintained and developed with other health and social services professionals and podiatrists in order to promote the podiatry service.

To review current treatments and treatment plans to ensure they fit with 
evidence based/ best practice, NICE guidance and national service delivery frameworks.

To achieve Registration with Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and degree/diploma in Podiatry and local analgesia administration certificate .

To work within the HCPC code of conduct, Trust policies and procedures 
and adhere to the Patient’s Charter.

To follow departmental Policies, Procedures and Guidelines but have the 
discretion to make own clinical diagnosis and decisions within professional boundaries under delegation.

To be accountable to the Team Leader and assist and undertake duties as 
delegated and requested by the team leader.

To attend all mandatory training sessions as required by the Trust.

To ensure clinics are maintained to the highest levels and are suitable 
environments for treating patients.

To participate in Individual Performance Review and personal development planning and fulfil CPD requirements identified through IPR.

  • NVQ level 3 or above
