Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Full-Time Band 3 Respiratory Assistant Technical Officer to join our friendly and dedicated team at University Hospitals Dorset, working across both Poole and Bournemouth sites. The Department provides lung function tests for a wide range of Specialties across the Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to help in the Respiratory Physiology Labs.  Duties include performing varied breathing tests with Inpatients and Outpatients and clinic admin.  Applicants must be computer literate and enjoy working with patients.

Experience in healthcare is essential, and knowledge of respiratory tests would be advantageous but full training in all tests will be provided.

Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole General Hospital (cross-site working)

Any other changes not related to this relocation will be managed according to the relevant Trust or National terms and conditions.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 vocational healthcare qualification or equivalent
  • English Language GCE/GCSE or equivalent
  • Mathematics GCE/GCSE or equivalent
  • Science GCSE / equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • ARTP Spirometry Certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment with patients.
  • Health and safety principles
  • Infection control procedures
  • Supervising/training others
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in healthcare science

Technical Skills Competencies

Essential criteria
  • IT literate including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Able to follow established testing guidelines and SOPs without supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to new techniques and technologies
Desirable criteria
  • ARTP Spirometry register
  • Use of hospital IT systems i.e. EPR

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Basic understanding of Respiratory anatomy and Physiology.
  • Basic understanding of routine lung function tests including: Spirometry performance and interpretation FeNO performance and interpretation Overnight Oximetry
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of current Spirometry guidelines

  • Able to work under pressure with patients with distressing conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate test procedure to patient
