An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Radiology team at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The successful candidate will work full-time hours and in addition take part in a shift rotation covering weekends. There will also be an occasional requirement to work in the Radiology Department at Christchurch Hospital and at our Community Diagnostic Centre at the Health Science University in Boscombe.

This is a Band 2 – Band 3 progression grade which entails developing the job competencies needed to carry out the full range of duties of the role through work experience and on the job/tailored training activities. Progression to Band 3 will follow the successful completion of all training and sign off of the specific job responsibilities. This is likely to take around twelve months and progression to Band 3 will be effective from formal sign off.

Main duties of the job

The Radiology Directorate undertakes a wide variety of examinations including X-rays, ultrasound scans and procedures under radiology guidance. Radiography Department Assistants (RDA’s) work in all these areas undertaking various roles. The main duties are:

  • Performing basic nursing duties and care of the patient including applying dressings, dealing with bodily fluids, taking observations etc.
  • Assisting Consultants and advanced practitioners with procedures under radiology guidance such as biopsies, drainages and aspirations.
  •  Inputting data into the department computer systems such as the Radiology Information system (RIS) and the image archive system (PACS).
  • Assisting patients to prepare for examinations by helping them undress and explaining the procedure to them whilst maintaining privacy and dignity.
  •  Preparing procedure rooms for the forthcoming patients by laying up sterile trolleys, mixing barium compounds etc.
  •  Assisting the patients through examinations, helping them to manoeuvre on the examination table, providing re-assurance and giving an explanation of what is happening.
  •  Liaison with other wards, departments and staff members to arrange patient appointments/care.

You will be working with Consultant Radiologists, Sonographers and Radiographers. A basic knowledge of nursing, or experience in a caring profession would be an advantage but is not essential as full training will be provided.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of General Education
  • Basic computer skills
Desirable criteria
  • Computer Skills e.g. ECDL
  • NVQ 3 in Health and Social Care or Equivalent qualification/demonstrable experience as a Radiography Department Assistant

Experience

  • Working within a healthcare team
  • Experience in basic nursing care and assisting with sterile procedures.
  • Experience of hospital/care work

  • Evidence of team work

Technical Skills
