Job overview

We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic Consultant Interventional Radiologists to join our One Dorset Interventional team at Dorset County Hospital and University Hospital Bournemouth.  

The ideal candidate is an IR with a wide range of procedural skills covering both vascular and non-vascular IR, who would like to work in a beautiful part of the country, where a healthy work/life balance can be achieved. At the same time, you will be involved in providing a first-class standard of care to your patients, whilst further developing your skills and the IR service across Dorset. The post holder will join a cohesive group of substantive consultant radiologists and radiology trainees from the Wessex Training Scheme.

If you reside outside of Dorset and join us in this role you will receive a Warm Welcome payment of £10,000 as a thank you for bringing your expertise and knowledge to our Trust in addition to the usual relocation expenses.

Main duties of the job

Dorset County Hospital (DCHFT) and University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) collaborate to provide daytime and out of hours Interventional Radiology services to the population of Dorset, South Wiltshire and Jersey. Applications are invited for two full-time (2.0 WTE) Interventional Radiology (IR) Consultants to strengthen an established team. The successful candidates will form part of a 1:8.6 on call service based on the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site and share their time between DCHFT and UHD. 

The successful candidates will be required to have experience in a full complement of interventional procedures including endovascular aortic, peripheral vascular, embolization, urological and hepatobiliary interventions. Specialist interests including research activities are encouraged. Each post holder will have clinic and MDT commitments as part of their role. In addition, each post holder will be required to support the diagnostic requirements of the radiology service including cross-sectional imaging and biopsy provision.

Both trust provide an essential role in the One Dorset strategic direction and is part of the Dorset Imaging Clinical Network. Both DCH and UHD Radiology departments hold Quality Standard for Imaging Accreditation (QSI).

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via; CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6mths of interview); CESR or European Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher surgical/medical qualification (e.g. EBIR)
  • Full GMC Registration

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of the ability to manage the demands of being a Consultant IR.
  • Competencies evidenced by procedural logbook with audited outcomes
  • Experience of working within the NHS

Current Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • 3 years equivalent IR specialty training or currently in consultant IR position
  • Broad interventional radiology skill set appropriate for the post
  • Experience in a broad range of US, CT and MR examinations
  • Evidence of the clinical skills required to fulfill the specialty and sub-specialty elements of the job as in the job description and technical specification

Team Working and Service Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent collaborative working in a service development or improvement.
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets

Understanding and Participation in Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance and demonstration of their application in clinical practice
  • Evidence of participation in recent relevant audit

Management Training, Organisational Skills and Strategic Vision

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleague

Teaching and Communication

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Ability to supervise junior staff clinically and during research projects
  • Able to speak English as necessary to undertake the role
