Job overview
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated healthcare technicians with a keen interest in caring for the critically ill and their families, to join our Critical Care Team at Dorset County Hospital as a Band 3 Technician. You will be providing essential technical support in the assessment and management of critically ill patients.
This hands-on role is ideal for someone with a keen eye for detail, strong teamwork skills, and a passion for supporting high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment.
Main duties of the job
- Performing essential safety checks within the department
- Supporting the distribution of essential stores, supplies and pharmaceuticals throughout the department, to include contribution to the management of stock.
- Support patient care by preparing and decontaminating specialist Critical Care equipment as per manufacturers guidelines.
- Contribute to the ongoing maintenance of clinical equipment in the department through liaison with the medical engineering department.
- Assisting staff with manual handling of complex patients and where requested assist the therapies team with delivery of specific interventions, such as physiotherapy exercise and mouth care.
- Will be required to provide technical support in the assessment and management of Critical Care patients.
- Where requested to by the registered nurse, undertake cannulation, venepuncture, arterial sampling, ECGs, male and female catherisation.
- To support the registered nurse, where requested, with accurate and contemporaneous documentation, e.g. contribute to patient diaries, care plans, record observations/ fluid balance, pressure area care.
- To ensure up-to-date competence/ compliance with Trust mandatory training.

Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE level of equivalent
- Educated to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of the role of a band 3 technician in the deliverance of patient care
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in maintaining stock levels in the workplace
- Previous healthcare experience in either primary or secondary care
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Cannulation, venepuncture, arterial sampling, male/female catheterisation
- Excellent communication skills combined with the ability to ask and communicate with colleagues in an effective and positive manner
- Good interpersonal skills and able to communicate with patients and healthcare professionals
- Basic IT skills
- Ability to work systematically and under pressure in a busy environment
- Understand the principles of patient confidentiality
Desirable criteria
- Ability to work alphabetically and numerically with accuracy and attention to detail
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Able to work to given schedules and rotas whilst executing their personal responsibilities with referral to senior staff when required in a timely and efficient manner
