Job overview

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a registered Pharmacy Technician to join Fortuneswell Pharmacy as the Dispensary Manager.

Fortuneswell Pharmacy is a wholly owned subsidiary Outpatient Pharmacy located in next to the Fortuneswell Chemotherapy Unit at Dorset County Hospital.  For the last 7 years, our service has supplied of medicines to patients and pharmaceutical advice to haematology and oncology outpatients and healthcare professionals.  We have recently undergone a major refurbishment programme, and are looking to extend the high level of service offered to the rest of Dorset County Hospital’s outpatients.  We also provide a home delivery service to patients all over Dorset.

Salary negotiable dependent upon experience, and will include an annual performance reflated bonus.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated pharmacy technician, interested in overseeing the day-to-day management and ongoing development of the outpatient dispensing service at Fortuneswell Pharmacy.

The post holder will be responsible for managing a high-quality dispensary to ensure a safe and efficient service.  They will be responsible for managing the workflow, and ensuring that the necessary policies and procedures are in place and adhered to.

You will also have the opportunity to be actively involved in, and take a lead on, quality improvement and service development.

It is also expected that you will be able to undertake final accuracy checking of dispensed medication as an ACPT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To manage a high-quality dispensary to ensure a safe, accurate and efficient service making best use of staff skills and resource.

  • To contribute to the management and development of the outpatient pharmacy service by promoting innovation and streamlined working practices and implementing agreed changes.

  • To manage the dispensary processes and workflow, co-ordinating with other pharmacy staff to meet the needs of the service, both clinically and operationally.

  • To monitor dispensary performance using the Prescription Tracking System and directing workflow as necessary to ensure compliance with agreed targets.

  • To develop dispensary services and implement change when necessary.

  • To co-ordinate and provide training to other members of the pharmacy team as appropriate.

  • To ensure training records of all staff are kept up to date.

  • To ensure good working practices and procedures are in place, adhered to and regularly updated to reflect current work practice, legislation and local policy.

  • To assist in the control, supply and denaturing of Controlled Drugs.

    To develop a programme of Accuracy Checking for Dispensing Assistants.

  • To ensure appropriate stock control and records are maintained.

    To receive and issue work and handle prescription payments according to SOPs.

  • Investigate and resolve customer complaints and enquiries.

  • Monitor and investigate dispensing errors and near miss data to identify trends and develop SOPs and staff training to prevent further errors.

  • To be aware of current national issues regarding technician development and legislation.

  • To participate in other duties appropriate to the grade at the request of the relevant manager.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as a pharmacy technician at Band 5 or above
  • Significant experience of working in and managing/supporting a Dispensary Environment.
  • Experience of management and supervision of staff, including direction of work, prioritisation skills and feedback.
  • In depth understanding of formulary and medicines management issues and the implications for dispensary services.
  • Good knowledge of therapeutic drug use in clinical situations gained by continuing professional development.
  • Comprehensive understanding on JAC Pharmacy Systems and the application for dispensing, stock management and electronic prescribing.
  • Thorough understanding of the legislation, procedures and protocols surrounding Clinical Trials and Unlicensed Medicines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the legal requirements (Law and Ethics) for dispensing and supplying medicines including Controlled Drugs and Over-The-Conter sales.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Health and Safety issues and their implications for staff, including COSHH.

Education & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 qualification in Pharmacy Services or equivalent
  • Registered Technician with GPhC
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) status
  • Practice Supervisor Qualification
  • Level 3 Management certificate or equivalent leadership qualification

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to check prescriptions whilst working independently.
  • Knowledge of the legal aspects of technician checking and the law relating to prescriptions.
  • Good and broad understanding of pharmacy practice in order to support and advise over staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work methodically and accurately.
  • Able to analyse and interpret prescriptions, identify problems and decide upon an appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative, able to plan and organise straightforward activities, adjusting plans and priorities as necessary depending upon circumstances.
  • Excellent spoken and written language English Language skills.
  • Computer literacy and keyboard skills.
  • Able to work flexibly within a team whilst having the ability to supervise, motivate and direct a team.
  • Committed to continuing professional development.
