Job overview

This role provides specialist inpatient and outpatient Trauma & Orthopaedic care with a focus on supporting the Hand and Wrist service. The postholder will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality patient care, support multidisciplinary working, participate in the consultant on‑call rota, and play an active role in service development, training, and governance.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver consultant-led trauma and orthopaedic services across inpatient and outpatient settings, with additional focus on Hand and Wrist conditions.
  • Participate in the 1:8 consultant on‑call rota, including post‑take ward rounds.
  • Work collaboratively with the Orthopaedic Treatment Service in primary care to ensure seamless patient pathways.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team working across Anaesthetics, Rheumatology, Radiology, Pathology, Elderly Care, nursing, physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy.
  • Provide training and supervision for Higher and Basic Surgical Trainees and other clinical team members.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will deliver comprehensive trauma and orthopaedic care, supporting both scheduled and emergency activity within the department. They will ensure efficient management of Hand and Wrist cases and maintain close working relationships with primary care colleagues to enhance community-based orthopaedic pathways. The role includes active participation in MDT discussions, clinical decision-making, education, audit, and service governance. The consultant will uphold high standards of clinical efficiency, patient safety, and service responsiveness, contributing to departmental targets and Trust-wide objectives.

 

Main responsibilities: 

  • Provide high‑quality consultant-led clinical care across trauma and elective orthopaedics.
  • Undertake on‑call duties and lead post‑take consultant reviews.
    Support and liaise with primary care Orthopaedic Treatment Services.
  • Participate fully in MDT activities and foster collaborative working.
     
  • Teach, supervise, and develop trainees and wider clinical staff.
     
  • Maintain efficient, effective patient care pathways and uphold governance standards.
     
  • Engage in CPD, audit, service development, and Directorate responsibilities.
     
  • Attend and actively contribute to departmental meetings and educational sessions.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a Licence to practice
  • An appropriate higher surgical/medical qualification
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via. CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6mths of interview for appointment to substantive consultant role), CESR or European Community Rights

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Completion or within 6 months of completing CCT training in upper limb surgery
  • Post CCT recognized fellowship in hand and wrist surgery (6-12 months minimum).
  • Experience in a special interest, that will complement those existing in the department

Current Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Willingness and ability to fulfil the general service elements of the job description
  • Evidence of the clinical skills required to fulfill the specialty and subspecialty elements of the post as in the job description and technical specification

Team Working and Service Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership and service development
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships and team working

Understanding and Participation in Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of understanding of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of and direct involvement in audit.
  • Knowledge of principles of research and evidence of involvement in research.

Management Training, Organisational Skills and Strategic Vision

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of general management training and skills appropriate for the post. Evidence of ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust. Knowledge of organisational aspects of the NHS

Teaching and communication

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of teaching experience and abilities appropriate to the post. Ability to present effectively to an audience. Ability to communicate effectively
