Job overview
We have an exciting new opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic pharmacist to join University Hospitals Dorset. You will be rotating through our clinical areas including women's and children's, general medicine, intensive care, surgery, trauma, older people medicine, cancer and aseptic production unit. Additional rotations that may be added include medicines information, nutrition and palliative care.
Our welcoming and friendly pharmacy team is highly regarding with the trust, and we are looking for an experienced pharmacist to join us in representing the pharmacy service and trust values. The pharmacy team's values are centred around patient care and medicines optimisation to ensure the best patient outcomes. As a pharmacist in this role, you will be embedded in the clinical team, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, attending ward rounds and playing an integral part in the patient care journey
You will be supported in your personal development, and you will be actively encouraged to evolve your clinical, professional and leadership skills, through coaching and mentoring, and by completing training courses and formal qualifications.
Main duties of the job
Main duties of the job
- Patient-Centred Care: Provide a patient-focused and clinically competent pharmacy service to inpatient medical wards. This involves working directly with patients and contributing to their care.
- Team Development: Work with and develop rotational pharmacists, technicians, and trainees within the medical directorate, including supporting their professional and clinical skills.
- Clinical Guidance and Practice: Contribute to the development of clinical guidance and ensure that pharmacy practices align with national guidelines. Implement cost-saving measures, develop and review patient group directions (PGDs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs) where necessary.
- Integration and Collaboration: Integrate secondary care services within the broader NHS Dorset Healthcare system. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and contribute to the overall patient care strategy.
- Service Development: Play a role in the ongoing development of pharmacy services within the medical directorate. Suggest improvements, streamline processes, and stay updated with best practices.
- Leadership and Mentorship: Act as a role model and pharmacy ambassador, and demonstrate leadership qualities. Mentor and line manage rotational pharmacists, helping them develop their skills and knowledge.

This role will require one late finish per week, weekend shifts 1 in 5 (either Saturday or Sunday) and approximately one Bank Holiday shift per year. This role includes on-call duties, the roster is approximately 1 week in 9 weeks.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Master’s degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
- Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy or evidence of equivalent experience
- Non-Medical Prescribing qualification or prepared to train for this
- Pharmacist registration with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
Desirable criteria
- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- 2 years NHS hospital experience
- Clinical audit / Drug Use Review projects
Desirable criteria
- Mentoring / training of staff
Other
Essential criteria
- Good organisational abilities and able to prioritise work
- Ability to provide complex advice and guidance requiring analysis, interpretation and comparison of clinical options
- Good clinical knowledge of current therapeutics and pharmacy practice
