Head of Nursing - Mental Health Services

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced Health Care Professional  to join our dynamic leadership team as we embed our triumvirate leadership model within our community services directorate. This is a new role, which together with the Service Director and Clinical Director will work in partnership to bring medical, clinical, and operational management and leadership together, to drive high quality services with a relentless focus on patient needs, outcomes, and experience.

The community directorate has a diverse portfolio of services with multiple change programmes, meaning that this role is not for the fainthearted!  So, if you are dynamic and experienced health care professional  with energy and drive is the job for you.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the role is to provide expert advice on quality and safety of care and to provide professional leadership across the CYP, MH & LD Directorate .  As Head of Nursing Therapies and Quality, you will be responsible for working in partnership with the Service and Clinical Directors and their teams to drive the delivery of:

High quality care and reducing unwarranted variation. 

Development of clinical pathways and service transformation underpinned evidence and informed by best practice.

A workforce strategy to develop new roles, enhanced competencies, revised skill mix and ways for working to deliver sustainable and resilient services within financial and resource allocation.

The post holder will play a lead role in developing a culture which encourages innovation, learning and research, at all levels, supporting and delivering the Trust’s objectives.    The successful candidate will be a visible clinical leader with demonstrable experience of driving quality improvements across a range of community services, understand how services fit into the wider clinical pathway, have a proven ability to forge collaborative relationships at all levels, and be a credible clinical leader to teams and wider partners to drive continuous service improvements.

Person specification

Knowledge, Skills, Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse / AHP
  • Relevant full Masters degree or working towards or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of recent evidence based professional development in an up to date portfolio
  • Exceptional proven leadership skills
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and professional accountability
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards PhD or showing active engagement in research.

Job Specific Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in effective leadership and risk management, Yes demonstrating competency in the 9 leadership dimensions of the Healthcare Leadership Mode
  • Experience of complex service delivery including multi agency working.
  • Practical experience of transformational and change management
  • Able to demonstrate wide knowledge of health policy and its application in practice
  • Able to demonstrate innovation and effective use of resources
  • Evidence of significant involvement in policy and practice change
  • Able to analyse performance, competing perspectives and priorities in the delivery of health and support service improvement.
  • Experience of developing service related plans and strategies and joint working with colleagues in a matrix involvement approach.
  • Able to apply and interpret national frameworks for financial service delivery of all improvement.
  • Ability to lead meetings and chair case conferences and reviews relating to more complex service users or situations
  • Significant relevant clinical leadership experience within mental health, learning disabilities or children's services

Managerial Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of operational management or senior management in a corporate governance setting at Band 8a or equivalent or above in health or social care
  • Experience of working effectively across organisational and professional boundaries in complex organisations
  • Proven track record of success in managing multi-disciplinary teams, individual and team performance; management of absence, and workforce planning
  • Able to undertake clinical supervision, systematic peer caseload review of colleagues on an individual or group basis, coaching and mentoring

Finance

  • Proven track record of success in budget management
