Employer heading
General Practitioner - Shaftesbury & Sherborne Hospitals
GP
Job overview
Are you a general practitioner looking to provide primary care services within two of our community hospitals? We are looking for a part time general practitioner to be based across 2 of our community hospitals in Shaftesbury and Sherborne.
Both hospitals run rehabilitation wards caring for patients of all ages who have typically stepped down from acute hospitals following illness, injury, surgery, or deconditioning. Most patients are then discharged either home or to a nursing or residential care setting, depending on their functional recovery and support needs.
A significant proportion of the role involves end of life care, symptom control and advance care planning, ensuring that patients and families receive compassionate, personalised support. As a general practitioner you’ll complement the existing multidisciplinary team, which includes GPs, associate specialists and ANPs, by contributing to the day-to-day medical management of patients with a broad range of common and ongoing medical conditions.
This role is for 32 hours per week and we offer commitment to flexible working, career development opportunities and our excellent NHS benefits.
For any questions or the opportunity to discuss the role before application, please contact Dr Andy Dean, Medical Director & Deputy CMO Integrated Community Services and Physical Health; [email protected]
Main duties of the job
As a general practitioner you will provide medical care for the patients on the wards, in collaboration with the Responsible Clinician/Multi-Professional Advanced Clinician, Advanced Practitioner and the ward nursing team. You will support the supervision of the clinical work of the Advanced Practitioner and will develop a mutually supportive clinical relationship with the Advanced Practitioner in managing the patient’s clinical need.
You will collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team in the planning and provision of care, investigations, treatment, and discharge for patient and you’ll work in liaison with the responsible clinician.
As the general practitioner you will provide timely clinical review of patients, participate in ward rounds, and keep up-to-date and accurate clinical record. You’ll implement appropriate treatment plans for patients, in collaboration with the patient, and the multidisciplinary team, including relevant assessment of treatment escalation plans and resuscitation status where appropriate.
You will carry out the daily tasks as identified in the Medical Diary and in liaison with the nurse in charge of the ward.
The role includes participation in the medical rota and may require working across both Shaftesbury and Sherborne sites to support continuity and safe staffing across the service.

For the main duties and responsibilities for this role please read the attached job description and person specification. When completing your application please ensure your supporting statement reflects the criteria set out in these documents by showing how your experience and skills apply to this post.
We understand that using AI can be a useful and supportive tool when completing your application. However, we have also seen an increase in the over-reliance of AI tools which is negatively impacting applications as they remove candidate’s individuality, and it becomes much harder to get a sense of who you are and your authentic experience. If you do use AI, it should be used to enhance your application and not to create your supporting statement in its entirety. If we suspect you have used AI to create your supporting statement and this does not match your experience, we may withdraw your application.
