Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Durham Tees Valley Listening Service for Band 3/Trainee Support Workers within the Durham Tees Valley Listening service.
The Durham Tees Valley Listening Service provides a telephone intervention to residents aged 18 and above living in Teesside, Durham and Darlington. Support through the service is available 24/7, and offers an alternative space for individuals who do not require mental health crisis support.
The service is driven by the understanding that people are generally able to find solutions to their own problems when they feel listened to and validated.
Main duties of the job
The main role of a support worker within the Durham Tees Valley Listening service, is to provide a listening ear to those who contact the team, to support them during times of emotional distress.
Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
- The team will give individuals the time and encouragement to talk about their worries and the things that are causing them upset without pressure or judgement.
- Establish a therapeutic relationship with callers, built on trust and respect.
- Recognise that anyone accessing the service will be treated as a unique individual with dignity, respect and compassion whilst promoting a non-discriminatory service to all.
- Be flexible and responsive to individual needs, responding to individuals in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality within the boundaries of our environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will have strong communication skills, interpersonal skills and be dependable, approachable, flexible and enthusiastic. The successful applicant will demonstrate the trust values and behaviours.
The successful candidate must have completed the Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 or equivalent. Candidates must also have Literacy and Numeracy level 2 or equivalent and must complete the Trust Healthcare Assistant competencies within their probationary period (first 6 months in role).
Any successful candidates who do not have the required qualifications, will be expected to enrol on the Healthcare Assistant Framework which will include the acquisition of a Level 3 NVQ/Diploma Health and Social Care, Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy or equivalent and achievement of competencies. You will have a maximum of 2 years to complete this.

Essential criteria
- Diploma in Health and Social Care level 3 or equivalent or must be achieved within 2 years of commencement in post for Trainee
- Key skills in Literacy and Numeracy level 2 or must be achieved within 2 years of commencement in post.
- Care Certificate or must be achieved within 12 weeks of commencement in post for Trainee
- Successful completion of Trust’s full HCA Framework within 6 month probationary period or Trainee must achieve successful completion of the Trust’s full HCA Framework within 2 years of commencement in post.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience as a Band 2/3 HCA or equivalent in a care environment. (Trainee post: no essential experience required)
Skills
Essential criteria
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of confidentiality
- Effective time management
Desirable criteria
- Experience of MHA
- Experience of MCA
