Applications are invited to  apply for a three month locum consultant post  for an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon to supplement out team of seventeen Consultant Surgeons who provide emergency and specialist elective general surgery services.   The successful candidate will help to develop the elective Upper GI Service provision across the whole of Teesside, working collaboratively with colleagues in South Tees under the joint group structure of executives leading the Trusts.  The post holder will further bolster the significant inroads that have already been achieved in improving the biliary service provided by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Experience and competence in the full scope of laparoscopic Upper GI surgery is essential. The successful candidate will be expected to provide a service for the management of gallbladder and CBD pathology, gastro oesophageal reflux disease and Para oesophageal hernia. JAG accreditation for diagnostic gastroscopy would be beneficial upon commencement of the post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will participate fully in all elements of the general surgical service, which is organised into the provision of emergency surgical and elective work. The post holder will provide emergency general surgery and be involved in the one in twelve on-call rota, supported by junior medical staff and HENE NTN trainee general surgeons.

The post will be offered for 10 PAs under the Terms and Conditions of Service for Consultants (England).  Candidates should be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice and on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of obtaining their CCST).  Although the post is tenable on a whole time basis, any applicant who, for personal reasons, is unable to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post.   Additional PA's will be allocated following job plan review and agreed between candidate and employer.

This appointment is subject to an Enhanced Level Criminal Records Bureau check.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered medical qualification
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Fully registered with the GMC
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register (CCT, CESR, ECR)
Desirable criteria
  • higher qualification relevant to the specialty
  • MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Fully trained and experienced/competent in the full scope of laparoscopic upper GI surgery
  • Evidence of continuing medical education
Desirable criteria
  • Post CCT, AUGIS or RCS accredited fellowship in upper GI
  • Interest in management of biliary pathology and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
  • Experience in robotic surgery
