Job overview
*Advert may close early if sufficient volume of applications is reached*
North Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust have collaborated to form a Hospital Group Structure known collectively as University Hospitals Tees. Within this structure the pathology departments have been working together to create the Tees Valley pathology service with the development of a central processing hub on the North Tees site and two Essential Service Laboratories on the James Cook and Friarage sites which will support urgent complex dissection and frozen section work as clinically appropriate . We are actively seeking suitable candidates who will complement and develop existing services and join our existing teams of Consultant Cellular Pathologists. We anticipate that support will be required across our sites and that this post will be primarily based at The University Hospital of North Tees site once our future accommodation plans are completed later this year
Main duties of the job
Appointees are expected to undertake routine case reporting, including frozen section reporting, for a general surgical case mix and participate in relevant sub-specialty team reporting of complex resection specimens. A declared interest in a sub-specialist area of cellular pathology would be advantageous.
There is no requirement to report cervical cytology or diagnostic cytology. However, if a diagnostic cytology interest and expertise can be demonstrated inclusion in the cytology reporting rota will be considered.
Appointees are expected to provide advice and support to clinical colleagues, to be available to discuss histopathological findings and to contribute to the audit and monitoring of the effectiveness of the clinical services.
Appointees will be expected to provide pathology support to one or more cancer multidisciplinary teams, to contribute to the supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within the directorate, maintain relevant CPD activity and contribute to the effective running of the directorate by service planning and development.
Appointees are not required to undertake adult hospital interest autopsies unless they have a specific autopsy interest. There is no requirement to undertake perinatal autopsies.
Coronial autopsies are not part of the NHS duties of the post and any autopsies undertaken at the behest of H.M. Coroner are accommodated using a time shifting mechanism and with the agreement of the clinical director.
Working for our organisation

The team is supported by specialist trainees and Advanced Practitioner BMS in dissection and reporting. We also have good working relationships with our colleagues in neighbouring Trusts, working together to develop services as part of regional Speciality Reference Groups. A digital imaging project board has been successful in securing bid money to further develop our regional digital imaging solution which supports cellular pathology reporting.
