North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a  1.12 whole time equivalent  highly motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Histology team.

 The modern, well equipped department processes approximately 60,000 specimens per annum, and provides a comprehensive service that includes Immunohistochemistry and HER2 testing.

 Although the IBMS specialist diploma is a requirement, applications will be welcome from those within 3 months of completion of the qualification. 

 The pathology departments at NTH and STH are working collaboratively to develop a joint service with services being delivered on both hospital sites. This will require cross site working as appropriate 

The department operates between 07.00 - 18.00 Monday to Friday and the post holder is expected to work flexibly within these hours. In addition, the post holder is required to work a 1:6 Saturday Rota. Saturday shifts are between 07.00 - 16.00 with the following Monday non-contracted.

 The Department has UKAS accreditation and IBMS training approval and has a well-established CPD programme

Main duties of the job

Under direction of the Pathology Management Team and Senior Biomedical Scientists in Cellular Pathology the post holder will be required to perform the routine day to day operations within the Cellular Pathology department, rotating between all sections within the specialty following approved methodologies and procedures.

 To assist in the training and development of Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants and other staff grades according to departmental policy. It is expected that the post holder will work autonomously without direct supervision.

Main duties include : 

 

 Participate in allocated work rotas, carrying out laboratory techniques in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.

Perform maintenance procedures on highly complex equipment requiring high levels of concentration and record all procedures undertaken

 Prioritise own work so that timely and accurate results are produced in order to achieve a high standard of diagnostic work which will contribute to optimal patient care

Monitor quality control to ensure accurate results, taking appropriate remedial action and bringing to the attention of senior staff

 Participate in the critical evaluation of new equipment / procedures and investigate poorly performing laboratory methods reporting findings to the line manager

To perform good stock control ensuring resources are used efficiently and order new stock in accordance with Trust Standing Financial Orders

 

To maintain an up to date knowledge base of methods in use within Histology and to be aware of scientific and technological advances within Histology. 

Ensure all records, evaluations and data are recorded and maintained in compliance with standards set by accreditation providers

Essential criteria
  • IBMS accredited degree
  • HCPC registration
  • Specialist Diploma

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS laboratory
  • Experience of ICT packages - word , excel
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory
  • Experience of Quality Management systems

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and Biomedical science
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and health safety measures
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with LEAN principles
  • Working knowledge of Pathology IT systems

Skills and attributes
