The post holder will be a nurse with diabetes experience who holds or is working towards clinical assessment skills and non-medical prescribing qualifications or a willingness to. They will work within a nurse- led team, contributing towards the provision of high-quality care to patients with Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.
Main duties of the job
The main responsibilities of the role will relate to clinical expertise with an emphasis on initiating, performing and maintaining standards of clinical excellence in diabetes care. The post holder will be able to work within the multidisciplinary team. This will include the assessment, diagnosis, interpretation of results, management and review of diabetes patients, under the supervision of a Diabetologist and lead/senior Diabetes specialist nurse
Most clinics are nurse- led. The post holder will work in all areas of diabetes care including pregnancy, preconception, young adult clinics and general diabetes clinics.
There should be a willingness to develop knowledge and skills in the use of technology used in the management of diabetes specific to Continuous glucose monitoring and Insulin pump therapy

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A well-respected diabetes specialist nurse who sets high standards and leads by example to motivate and empower others. Specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and research.
Work as a diabetes specialist nurse within the wider multidisciplinary team. Use clinical history taking, clinical examination and interpretation skills to assess patient’s needs in terms of diagnosis and treatment plans, under supervision of the MDT. Interpret bloods and review
management and treatment plans under the supervision of the MDT.
Work in the acute hospital setting, outpatient clinics as well as local community settings.
Deliver test results and sensitive and confidential information to individuals with compassion and empathy, taking into account distressing and emotional responses. Provide psychological
support where required, especially within the clinical areas of pregnancy, end of life and Intensive Care Units
Initiate treatments in the management of diabetes
Provide specialist advice and ongoing lifestyle recommendations to patients and relatives
Participate in structured education
Act as a resource for patients and staff in the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
