In this role, you’ll use your knowledge and experience to keep our Trust buildings safe, compliant and running efficiently—helping ensure patients and staff can rely on high-quality, well-maintained facilities every day.

This vacancy offers flexibility to be based at either Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital or Brighton General Hospital, giving you the choice of location that works best for you.

Main duties of the job

As a Mechanical Gas Engineer, you will:

  • Carry out installation, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repairs on a range of gas-fired systems and equipment, including boilers, water heaters, and catering appliances.

  • Perform planned preventative maintenance across SCFT and other local organisations we support.

  • Support apprentices and semi-skilled colleagues with advice and guidance.

  • Use a variety of digital and analogue testing tools and update statutory records.

  • Work flexibly across Trust sites, with mileage reimbursed, and participate in an on-call rota for additional pay.

  • Help create and maintain our preventative maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

  • Be part of a team that values innovation, technical skill, and excellent service delivery.

Qualifications and/or professional registration

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a full range of trade procedures acquired through 4 year accredited course and/ or level 3 vocational qualification level or equivalent.
  • Hold relevant Commercial Gas Qualifications - CIGA1, CODNC01, TPCP1, TPCP1A Additional training will be given in further competencies as required.
  • Significant post apprenticeship/qualification experience in a similar role.
Desirable criteria
  • - Additional Gas competency qualifications - Boiler House Practice - BMS systems

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience on fault diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gas fired boilers and associated equipment building services plant and equipment.
  • Able to use wide range of fault diagnosis and test equipment.
  • Experience of using computers with basic IT skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in working in a hospital/healthcare environment.

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess good time management skills.
  • Highly skilled in use of hand and powered tools.
  • A working knowledge of all current Gas regulations.
  • A working knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act etc.
  • Working knowledge of Legionella Control and Prevention.

Desirable criteria
  • Ability to carry out and record risk assessments.
  • Experience on working on Gas fired catering equipment.
  • An understanding in relation to service delivery and relationships with colleagues.

  • To be prepared to participate in the Estates Out of Hours on-call rota.
  • Access to own vehicle for work purposes.
  • Must possess current full UK or EU Driving Licence.
