Job overview

We are looking for a  Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join our team here on Level 8a West, coordinating and leading day to day shifts for the ward. 

We are an acute cardiology area comprising 8 Coronary Care beds and 6 step down beds, providing a Tertiary Service across a large proportion of the south east coast of England. We also have a 12 trolleyed Cardiac Day Case Unit attached to the ward.

Services we run include a Primary PCI service, Transthoracic Aortic Valve Replacements, Ultrafiltration and Preventing Readmissions service.

The Cardiac consultants and the nursing team are very dynamic and forward thinking, leading in the implementation of new developments within Cardiology.

Main duties of the job

  • The role of the Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse is to initiate, facilitate and evaluate effective holistic patient care in accordance with University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust procedures, and within the NMC code of conduct. 
  • The post holder is responsible and accountable for delivery of evidence based care. 
  • The post holder, after suitable training will participate in the  clinical and administrative management of both wards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide effective,safe,evidence based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct
  • Practices within the NMC code of conduct and has responsibility for promoting and monitoring this practice on the ward
  • Take the lead role in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised evidence based patient care including the monitoring of care standards through audit and other activities
  • Participates in the development and implementation of an explicit ward philosophy of care
  • Effectively processes admissions & transfers and plans discharges in accordance with UHSussex policy and standards Actively participates and monitors the promotion of education for patients, their relatives and colleagues and ensures these needs are met within available resources
  • Ensure provision of all medications as prescribed in accordance with UHSussex Policy 
  • Coordinates the daily ward activity to enable the best use of human and other resources to meet patient’s needs and liaises with the Clinical Site Manager, Care Centre Manager, Cardiac Co-ordinator and Senior Nurse to facilitate overall management of the Cardiac Care Centre

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience
  • Registered General Nurse, or Registered Comprehensive Nurse
Desirable criteria
  • Minimum of 1 Cardiology module
  • Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing
  • Mentorship course or equivalent
  • ENB 124 or equivalent course
