Job overview

We have a  maternity leave vacancy with our Newborn Hearing Screening teams, working across  Brighton, Princess Royal ( Haywards Heath) and Worthing Hospitals.

The successful candidate will participate in the provision of hearing screening in Newborn babies within the Sussex area, under the supervision of the Hearing Screening Team Leader.

These positions will include some weekend and bank holiday working.

The successful applicant will be required to complete a external Competency Assessment in Newborn Hearing Screening.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out the hearing screening of babies within the Post-Natal Ward, Delivery Suite, special Care Baby Unit and outpatient departments. Following the screening test, data will be transferred onto the NHSP data base (S4H). Ensure accurate test results are given to parents and other Health Care professionals as required and notes are completed. Arrange referrals to Audiology Department for diagnostic testing when appropriate and deal sensitively with any parental concerns

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To identify which babies require screening by using the Screening database (Smart4Hearing), Patient Administration database, Audiology database and liaising with ward staff, screen and data collection.

To gather and accurately record clinical and screen data relevant to the screening process.

To complete the hearing screen and communicate results to parents, team members, Local Manager, Midwives and other health care professionals.

To upload results from the screening process to the national database in a timely manner.

To promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment endorsing a family friendly approach to care, ensuring that parents and families retain their dignity and individuality at all times.

Facilitate the smooth running of the programme in association with the Local Manager and other team members, by maintaining an up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to the post, and be participating in clinical audit at local, regional and national levels.

Concentration required to manage own workload and when screening on a busy ward where the work pattern can be unpredictable. This includes uploading screen results to national database.

On occasion, the post holder will be required to deal with emotional situations e.g. with parents whose baby has obtained a no clear response at hearing screen.

Ensure consumables/stock are sufficient in order to be able to be able to run the service and re-order if necessary.

Person specification

Qualifications / Experience

Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent, including English and Maths. Educated to at least NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge and experience of IT administrative systems, IT software programmes to include Microsoft applications
Desirable criteria
  • Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) External Competency Assessment (ECA) (or NHSP OSCE) (D) - otherwise be required to successfully complete
  • NHSP ECA within 3 months of starting post Health Screener Diploma (HSD) (D) –otherwise will be required to enrol and complete HSD within expected time scales
  • BSL Stage 1
  • Previous experience of NHSP screening AOAE and AABR
  • Experience of using Smart 4 Hearing (S4H)
  • Awareness of safeguarding children’s policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Data Protection Act, patient confidentiality, Caldicott recommendations
  • Previous clinical NHS/Healthcare environment experience
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working with people within a caring setting
  • Experience of working within a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload
  • Experience of working with newborn & their families
