We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and passionate midwives with at least 1 year experience and have completed a Preceptorship programme to join our maternity bank team in Brighton.   The city, sandwiched between the sea and South Downs is renowned for its diverse and vibrant population with iconic historical landmarks and eclectic cultural scene. Maternity services in Brighton specialise in both complex and low risk pregnancies including:

Extreme prematurity (Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care)
Specialist Maternal Medicine Clinic 
Continuity of Carer Teams
Award Winning Homebirth Service

This post is rotational hospital role based at The Royal Sussex County Hospital, across the Antenatal, Labour and Postnatal Wards and the Maternity Assessment Unit.

Main duties of the job

  • Work across all inpatient areas demonstrating confidence and competence in providing both low risk and high risk care.
  • Assess, plan and deliver a high standard of care throughout the pregnancy and birth continuum to pregnant women/birthing people and their babies.
  • Ensure appropriate and timely referral, working in close collaboration with the maternity multi-disciplinary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient Care Delivery

  • Take full responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating Midwifery care consistent with evidence based practice for parents, babies and families.
  • Discuss options and support parents in making informed choice in their plan of care such as Birth plans, pain relief, infant feeding, baby care, return to work and family planning.
  • Discuss options and support parents in making informed choice in the period following birth.
  • Analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of such care, making necessary modifications of any midwifery care pathway and giving professional advice and support as required.
  • Act as the clients advocate and empower them to promote their own health and well being.
  • Respect the need for privacy and dignity and obtain clients informed consent throughout the childbirth continuum.
  • Refer clients to other practitioner’s e.g. senior midwife, obstetrician, physiotherapist and paediatrician when needs and risks are beyond the post holder’s scope of practice or require specialist input.

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Midwife - NMC registered
  • Completed Preceptorship/Transition Programme/post reg experience
  • 997/98 Mentorship Module/PSPA/or equivalent
  • Diploma or equivalent portfolio of evidence
  • Current UK Driving Licence
  • European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Modules 1,2,7 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Band 6 Experience
  • Life Support (NALS)/Advanced Life Support Obstetrics (ALSO) or equivalent
  • LEO Child Protection Course
